Only stagnant pools remain after the Zunami

Former president Jacob Zuma’s rambling monologue on the SABC on Wednesday afternoon wasn’t just an arrogant, delusional act of defiance in the face of the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) instruction to step down as head of state.

It was his final act of working outside the structures of the governing party, and of the state, and of using the resources that his deployment to government had enabled him to pursue his own agenda, often to the detriment of both.

uBaba’s left us two Dark Lords

Things are getting tense at the ANC’s national elective conference. Comrades are suffering finger-fatigue from the continuous number-crunching that accompanies all the backstabbing and double-crossing that passes as lobbying before the party’s “top six” vote. None more so than Enoch Godongwana, the Cyril Ramaphosa lobbyist and ANC national executive member. The comrade has been permanently […]

After 10 years at the helm of the ANC— We need to talk about Jacob Zuma

The tenure of Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma as president of the ANC has come to an end. His presidency of the country will continue to limp along for a while — weeks, maybe months — but probably not the 18 or so months our electoral schedule allows him to stay for. His fate in that arena […]

Lessons for Jacob Zuma in Robert Mugabe’s misfortunes

President Robert Mugabe’s endgame in Zimbabwe holds various lessons for his South African counterpart, Jacob Zuma, as the latter too, considers his prospects towards the end of his presidency. Ramaphosa nowhere to be found on ANC Women’s League NEC nomination list

The mafia state is in full swing

There is no longer a crystal-clear difference between the current state of our democracy and the telltale signs of a mafia state. That, in its essence, is the nexus insight from Jacques Pauw’s new book, The President’s Keepers, which is why the responses from various parts of the ANC-led government and state are as hysterical […]
