Another VAT payout from SARS to Guptas worth R89-million
The South African Revenue Service has for the second time allowed a multi-million-rand VAT repayment claimed by a Gupta-owned business to be paid to a third party, court documents show.
Times Select has learned that, on April 11, SARS made a payment of R89-million, meant for Optimum Coal Mine, to a third party, a company named In House Wages.

Trevor Manuel says he is a witness, not suspect in SARS ‘rogue spy unit’ case
Johannesburg – Former finance minister Trevor Manuel on Thursday, said he was a witness and not a suspect in the case against three former senior South African Revenue Services (Sars) officials facing charges of corruption and contravention of the Rica Act.
“I confirm that I had indeed provided the prosecution with a statement last year, under compunction of a subpoena issued in terms of section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The list of witnesses the State will be drawing on in their case against a trio of ex-SARS officials is throwing up names well known during the trial of former police commissioner Jackie Selebi as well as beleaguered SARS executives Tom Moyane and Jonas Makwakwa.

Company involved in Gupta VAT payout previously involved in Moyane nephew scandal
The company that received the Guptas’ Sars VAT payout is closely connected to a company whose R2.2-billion contract with Sars was cancelled in 2016 because one of its shareholders was now suspended Sars commissioner Tom Moyane’s nephew.
In 2016, Moyane’s nephew Nhlamulo Ndhlela was found to have scored a debt collection contract from Sars worth R220-million.

Billions of rand can easily be brought into over-stretched-state coffers if illicit trade is addressed with urgency.
South Africans were shocked in October when then finance minister Malusi Gigaba informed the nation in his mid-term Budget speech that a drastic decline in economic growth, coupled with “a sharp deterioration” in tax collections, had led to a tax revenue shortfall of R50.8billion – the largest under-collection since the 2009 recession.
Since then, Gigaba has announced a 1% VAT increase – the first in our democratic era – to try to address the shortfall, before Nhlanhla Nene replaced him as the person holding the purse strings.
