Durban beachfront still in disrepair ahead of holiday rush
With Durban preparing to receive millions of visitors over the festive season, many of its beachfront showers are not working.
Njabulo Zondi, who works along the promenade as a sand sculptor, said they had not been operational for a few months.
“It’s the festive now and these showers must be working,” he said.
Zondi said he went to the beach at least three times a week and used water from the showers for his sculptures and after taking a swim.
Pensioner Robert Sinner, who also frequents the beachfront, said of the two sets of showers at North Beach, only two showers from one set were working.
“Those showers haven’t been working for nine months, and three months ago they started leaking water. When I enquire, I am told the spares to fix them are imported from overseas,” Sinner said, adding that the beachfront was in a bad state.
“At least three times this year salt water made its way into the freshwater taps. Local clubs had to buy bottle

Exclusive auction – Anger as Durban car auction reserved for township blacks only
Durban – ETHEKWINI Municipality’s attempts to improve the spending power of Africans – under the age of 35 – by excluding Indians and coloureds from an official car auction drew widespread criticism this week.
The event was officially dubbed a radical economic transformation (RET) auction. It involved the selling off of various used municipal vehicles from the city fleet site and was advertised in a newspaper which stipulated that it would only allow the participation of young people from townships as well as military veterans.
The event stemmed from a promise made during a conference on RET earlier this year, where the eThekwini Municipality said it would – through business associations – accelerate interventions to achieve “economic emancipation and equality” for previously marginalised businesses.
As a result, only those registered on the National Military Veterans’ database, and those under the age of 35 who lived in townships or communities under

Victim of armed robbery and hijacking fights back, shoots and kills suspected robber
A Durban driver, who was being robbed with a knife to his throat, fought back and killed one of his assailants, police said on Monday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the driver was accosted in Pinetown, just before 07:00, on the corner of Anderson and Josiah Gumede roads.
“It is alleged that one [suspect] switched off the engine and the other put a knife against the neck of the driver, demanding money and a cellphone.
“The driver pulled out a firearm and fired two shots at the suspects. One died a few metres away from the scene.”
Zwane said that, while the other robber was wounded, he had managed to escape.
“Police are still looking for him,” Zwane added.

Durban beach-front degeneration exposé – “Guess Carte Blanche’s camera footage is blowing it out of proportion then” is the typical response from ANC Mayor’s office!
Durban – The city’s Golden Mile – stretching 6km along the beachfront from Blue Lagoon to uShaka – came under the spotlight this week in a Carte Blanche exposé showing how drug addicts and vagrants have hijacked some of the city’s most valuable sites.
With about 1million visitors expected to descend on the city this festive season, it is expecting to receive at least a R2.4billion cash injection over December and January.
However, the investigative journalism TV series reported that robberies, stabbings, drug dealings and pollution threaten to scare away visitors.
The programme’s recent feature showed how heroin needles and shards of broken glass from bottles smashed to make crack pipes can be found on the sandy shores, alleys between hotels and street corners meters away from the Golden Mile.
But the city says that it is making a concerted effort to ensure that beaches are properly maintained, and that it is speaking to NGOs about ways to deal with th

This is what the ANC-government did to SA’s health care! – Cancer patients in KZN must wait up to six months for mammogram screening
Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo is on record calling for people to get screened for early detection of cancers.
And late last month, the national and provincial health departments launched a cancer campaign to educate people that many cancers were preventable or could be “successfully” treated through early detection and timeous treatment.
However, more concerns about the KwaZulu-Natal oncology crisis have been raised by advocacy groups after revelations that the waiting period for a mammogram screening is currently more than six months.
At least four women have told the Daily News that they will undergo screening between May 9 and 16 next year. Three said they had gone to uMlazi’s Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital “some months ago” concerned about lumps in their breasts, and to their shock were told to return in May next year for mammograms.
The fourth woman had since been told at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital that she had cancer.

Lack of empathy causes disturbed patient being burned after being locked up in solitary confinement at Wentworth Hospital
A mentally disturbed patient was found with burns after being locked alone in a ward in the Wentworth Hospital in Durban, said the IVP.
Ncamisile Nkwanyana, the IVP’s health spokeswoman in KwaZulu-Natal, said urgent action should be taken against medical staff who neglect mental-disturbed patients in health care institutions.
“The neglect of such patients is a serious concern. Misconduct, incompetence and negligence do not belong in our healthcare system and there must be drastic action against anyone convicted of it. ”
Nkwanyana believes the nurses concerned should be suspended and their actions are being investigated, and if found guilty, they must be fired because “a lack of empathy may not be tolerated in our healthcare system”.
She says the IFP is concerned about the absence of professionalism in health care institutions and observes a collapse of the professional healthcare sector, especially in public institutions.
The IFP considers it important t

How on earth did one of Zulu king Goodwill Zwelithini’s 27 children scored a low cost government house?
How the Zulu king’s daughter qualified for low cost government housing is currently under scrutiny. The building was reportedly meant as a “show” house for a R64 million project that will see 1,000 poor people benefit from accommodation equipped with two bedrooms, an open-plan lounge and kitchen, a bathroom and an outside water tank.
Two senior sources involved in the housing scheme told Sunday Times that 28-year-old princess Nqobangothando Zulu has become the project’s first beneficiary after receiving one of the houses, each of which costs almost R130,000.
This has led to questions, as the houses are meant for married people or people with dependants, and the princess herself is still a dependant.
Royal spokesperson Thulani Zulu claims he has not heard of the princess receiving the house.
He said the building was on the palace grounds so that the king could keep an eye on the quality of the project, which he hoped would be of better quality than m
