Zwelithini, died in the early hours of Friday morning from Covid-19 complications at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, where he checked in last month for diabetes treatment. He reportedly contracted the coronavirus there, and was moved to intensive care. A US digital medicine company called Proteus makes ‘smart pills’ embedded with sensors that tell your doctor when you’ve taken your medication. The pills also track activity levels.
Backed by big name investors like Novartis, Proteus debuted the first medication made with the technology – a form of the depression and schizophrenia drug Abilify – in 2017.
Now, Proteus is expanding into cancer.
Still, the research on whether the pills actually help patients take their medications when they should remains somewhat unclear.

Dit is van die skoktoestande waarop Lindy Wilson, nasionale DA-woordvoerder, Donderdag op ’n oorsigbesoek aan die Waterval-kliniek in die Vhembe-distrik, Limpopo, afgekom het.
Dit is ondanks 95% van die begroting van die hospitaal wat gebruik word om salarisse te betaal.
Sy het ook die Elim-hospitaal in die distrik besoek wat deur die nasionale departement van gesondheid as ’n loodsprojek vir die beoogde Nasionale Gesondheidsversekeringsplan (NGV) geoormerk is.
“Die NGV is nie lewensvatbaar nie. Hoe kan dit werk as ’n loodsprojek van die NGV misluk het?” wou sy weet.
Die Elim-hospitaal, wat 108 jaar oud is, het ernstige probleme met infrastruktuur en die dak val inmekaar.

Cost-effective solutions to help deaf people navigate healthcare in developing countries is exactly what Banele Mhlongo and Vuma Mthembu, fourth-year medical students at the University of Cape Town (UCT), are trying to achieve with the app they are developing.
For people who are deaf, dealing with public services such as police stations or healthcare facilities without a sign-language interpreter can be stressful or at worst potentially dangerous. They are less likely to make use of healthcare facilities due to communication barriers, which can lead to an incorrect diagnosis or less than satisfactory treatment options.
The two students believe that communicating with the deaf is a vital aspect to create stronger health systems. Already, there is a strong focus on communication with patients at the UCT Health Science Faculty, where students learn isiXhosa and Afrikaans to ensure that patients can understand and respond to relevant questions when obtaining a medica
