‘Tomorrow the president will respond’ – Magashule

The ANC national executive committee (NEC) has not set an official deadline for President Jacob Zuma to respond to their decision to recall him, but the party expects him to reply on Wednesday.

“Tomorrow the president will respond,” Ace Magashule, the ANC’s secretary general, said on Tuesday.

Magashule was answering questions during a press briefing on the NEC outcomes after a 13-hour meeting yesterday where the ANC’s highest decision body decided to fire Zuma.
“Tomorrow the president will respond,” Ace Magashule, the ANC’s secretary general, said on Tuesday.

It’s a no from Zuma as ANC NEC fumbles

The ANC national executive committee (NEC) has reportedly resolved to recall President Jacob Zuma at its meeting in Irene on Monday.

This follows Zuma’s refusal to step down following the NEC’s declining to grant him a three-month “notice period”.

Zuma camp vies for control of KZN and Free State

ANC branches in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State are crying foul over the composition of the provincial task teams appointed by the party secretariat this week, saying they favour the disbanded provincial executive committees that were suspended by the party’s national executive committee (NEC). On Tuesday, ANC secretary general Ace Magashule announced a provincial task […]

To lead South Africa, Ramaphosa must balance populism and pragmatism

Maiden speeches are tricky. They only come once. The one delivered by newly-elected president of the African National Congress (ANC) Cyril Ramaphosa required extraordinary ingenuity. Ramaphosa had to knit together multiple dynamics into a coherent whole. He managed to do this, delivering a speech which largely resonated with the delegates. His maiden address to the […]

ConCourt: Parliament has failed to hold Zuma to account

The Constitutional Court has ruled that the National Assembly failed to put in place mechanisms to hold President Zuma accountable. The EFF, Cope and the UDM asked the highest court to compel Parliament to hold the president to account after its Nkandla judgement. Judge Chris Jafta, reading the orders, said the National Assembly failed to […]

uBaba’s left us two Dark Lords

Things are getting tense at the ANC’s national elective conference. Comrades are suffering finger-fatigue from the continuous number-crunching that accompanies all the backstabbing and double-crossing that passes as lobbying before the party’s “top six” vote. None more so than Enoch Godongwana, the Cyril Ramaphosa lobbyist and ANC national executive member. The comrade has been permanently […]

Don’t be fooled by Ramphosa’s ‘New Deal’ or NDZ’s ‘radical economic transformation’

It is now abundantly clear that the race to succeed Jacob Zuma as ANC president next month is between his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma — the president’s former wife and preferred successor. No one else matters. All our attention should be focused on these two. Not that the other supposed candidates for the […]

Ramaphosa nowhere to be found on ANC Women’s League NEC nomination list

It’s clear that there’s no love from the ANC Women’s League for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa. His name is nowhere on the league’s list of 223 members nominated for the all-powerful National Executive Committee (NEC). The league is backing Ramaphosa’s rival Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in the party’s presidential campaign that comes to a head at […]

ANC to intervene in three ‘troubled’ provinces over branch meetings

The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) is to intervene in branch general meetings in three provinces over nominations of presidential candidates for the upcoming national elective conference. Secretary general Gwede Mantashe told journalists during a media briefing on Monday that it would intervene in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Northern Cape. At least 70% […]

Jacob Zuma’s criminal status key for ANC rules

If corruption charges against Jacob Zuma were to be re-enrolled, a fraught responsibility would fall on ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe. Under the ANC’s constitution, the party’s secretary general “may suspend” a member or office bearer indicted to appear in a court if that seems necessary — “on the authority of” the party’s national executive […]
