The Chamber of Mines admits that the first round of negotiations, hosted by the Department of Mineral Resources, on the Mining Charter were robust
However, the Chamber had never expected the negotiations to play out any other way, especially with Minister Gwede Mantashe now at the helm of the department. The jury is still out on just how much progress was made during those negotiations.
The one point of contention, in some circles, is the exclusion of local communities from that forum. They are ultimately the ones most affected by any developments in the mining industry

Limpopo protesters demand jobs from mine
Northam – Communities living in the mining area of Northam Platinum mine in Limpopo braved the rain to hand over a memorandum to the mine on Thursday.
Communities residing in the 50km radius of the mine demanded that they be employed at the mine; that the mine recognise their councillors and traditional leaders; and for the mine to stop recruiting people from Teba in Phokeng and to rather recruit directly from the mining communities.

‘Unhappy’ security guards march in Pretoria
Pretoria – Hundreds of “unhappy” security guards took to the streets of the capital to march against exploitation, poor working conditions and unlawful deductions from salaries on Tuesday morning.
The security guards, AFFILIATED to the Academic and Professional Staff Association, came from as far as Bronkhorstspruit and Johannesburg are planned to march to different head offices of organisations that use Apsa security guards.

Cyril Ramaphosa was immediately hailed as a breath of fresh air after the decade-long Jacob Zuma debacle. The nation forgot, or ignored, his role in Marikana while his prowess as a businessman was lauded. A sensible, urbane politician who would save the economy.
His recent Cabinet reshuffle, however, reveals much of the same. The executive remains bloated and, with cronies retaining influence, his reputation for clean governance is shaken. The national conversation, however, has swung to expropriation without compensation.

Two leading trade unions have promised to do everything in their power to make sure Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba’s announcement of a 1% VAT increase does materialise.
