Verstopte dreine, lekkende dakke, stukkende lugversorging en te min matrasse – Dis maar van die uitdagings by die Bophelong psigiatriese hospitaal naby Mahikeng wat in 2016 oopgemaak het en waaraan sowat R450 miljoen reeds bestee is.
Dr. Job Mokgoro, Noordwes se premier, was ná ’n besoek verlede Woensdag aan die hospitaal “geskok” oor die omstandighede daar, het sy woordvoerder, Vuyisele Ngesi, gesê. Die premier is veral bekommerd dat die nie-nakoming van aanvaarbare standaarde en norme onvermydelik sal lei tot die uitbreek van siektes omdat infeksiebeheer nie behoorlik toegepas word nie.
“Personeel se moraal en pasiënte se regte word benadeel omdat die personeel op infrastruktuur-uitdagings fokus pleks van al hul aandag aan die pasiënte te gee,” sê Mokgoro.
Nóg probleme by die hospitaal sluit in dat die wassery glad nie funksioneer nie weens gebrekkige infrastruktuur. Daar is ook nie warm water nie omdat die sonkrag- en waterverwarmingstelsel

The Government Employees Medical Scheme (Gems) has admitted to blowing hundreds of thousands of its members’ contributions to pay for an empty building for a year.
Gems has been forking out more than R60,000 a month to Mowana Properties for its North West regional office on the Borekelong House ground floor in Mahikeng since September last year without occupying it.
The rental expenditure has resulted in Public Service and Administration Minister Ayanda Dlodlo calling for an investigation into the matter.
Instead of occupying the office space, GEMS opted to rent the Kobo Segole Guest House conference room for R31,000 a month. Insiders said that this has been categorised as “wasteful expenditure”, but no one has been held responsible.
