The country’s current debate over land expropriation without compensation, which has now been endorsed by Parliament, is important. Not because, as some fear, it will radically change the constitution. Rather, it tells South Africans how, in the economy and other spheres, the country deals with its minority ruled past: by crisis followed by compromise.
Crises are the only way change happens because, since the 1970s, the goal of the minority which has called the shots in the society for decades has been to ensure that changes alter as little as possible.

Fuel prices expected to drop by 36 cents

The Automobile Association (AA) has announced that the fuel prices are expected to drop on the 7th March.
Following to the unaudited month-end fuel data released by the Central Energy Fund, the AA said petrol is set to go down by 36 cents, diesel by 47 cents and paraffin by 26 cents.

The National Assembly has just voted in favour of beginning a process so that the Constitution can be amended to allow land expropriation without compensation.
On Tuesday, 324 of 400 MPs sat in the National Assembly to vote on the motion that was brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters.

Guess who’s back? Nhlanhla Nene has returned to the hot seat as South Africa’s Finance Minister, just two years and two months after he was unceremoniously dumped by Jacob Zuma.
