Today is a full day of hearings into corporate scandals in Parliament
South African corporate scandals will be the order of the day in Parliament on Tuesday, as the standing committee on finance rolls up its sleeves for a full day of hearings into the imbroglios at Steinhoff, KPMG, VBS Mutual Bank, and the SA Revenue Service.
The committee will start by receiving briefings on Capitec Bank and VBS Mutual Bank on Tuesday morning.

Ramaphosa’s presidential salary one of the highest vs other world leaders
South Africa’s new president Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to earn a salary of R3.6 million in 2018 – easily making him one of the best paid leaders in the world.
Former president Jacob Zuma last earned a salary of just under R2.9 million, which put him comfortably within the top 20 highest paid world leaders, despite the state of South Africa’s economyduring his term in office.

Sassa and Sapo (mostly) ready on grants
Come April 1, beneficiaries will receive their social grants, but the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will still need the help of Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) to make it happen.
Sassa announced in a joint press conference with the South African Post Office (Sapo) on Thursday that the two had made strides to ensure that South Africa’s 17-million grant beneficiaries will be paid on time.

Lectures stopped at Pietermaritzburg campus – Students wants free education, food and accommodation
Students have stopped classes at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Pietermaritzburg campus. Student Representative Council (SRC) member Xola Mehlomakhulu said students had not received their National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances for food and accommodation. He also claimed that post-graduate students were being excluded from the fund and unable to further their studies.

$50-million cryptocurrency scam cripples South African investors
More than 27‚500 people‚ including South Africans‚ Americans and Australians have been duped by the one of biggest bitcoin scams to hit South Africa.
Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha on Thursday confirmed that the serious commercial crimes unit was investigating complaints against BTC global‚ a company in which thousands invested cryptocurrency valued at over $50-million by transferring bitcoins into an online wallet address.

Treasury open to reviewing zero-rated VAT items
According to Treasury’s budget review document, there are 19 basic food items on the zero-rated list. This includes dried beans, samp, maize meal, rice, milk, tinned pilchards, brown bread, eggs and vegetables, as well as illuminated paraffin.
In its submission, Treasury highlighted findings from the Davis Tax Committee in 2015 that advised that no more zero-rated food items should be considered.

Fuel prices expected to drop by 36 cents
The Automobile Association (AA) has announced that the fuel prices are expected to drop on the 7th March.
Following to the unaudited month-end fuel data released by the Central Energy Fund, the AA said petrol is set to go down by 36 cents, diesel by 47 cents and paraffin by 26 cents.

Prasa to fork out R1bn in backpay as it reinstates 700 dismissed workers
The cost to reinstate the 700 workers who were fired by the Passenger Rail of South Africa (Prasa) after a protected strike five years ago will amount to over R1-billion.
Two weeks ago‚ the Constitutional Court dismissed an appeal by Prasa which had sought to appeal against a Labour Appeal Court judgment last year ordering the reinstatement of the workers.

JOHANNESBURG – DA leader Mmusi Maimane says he will today launch a national petition in Soshanguve to oppose the VAT increase in Parliament.

Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town: VAT hike pays for corruption
The Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa are concerned that citizens are effectively paying for the impact of corruption through a hike in Value-Added Tax (VAT).
The bishops expressed their “deep concern” at the hike by one percentage point to 15% announced in Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba’s “tough but hopeful” budget speech.
