Durban’s meningitis warning after death of 7-year-old boy

AT least 40 pupils as well as doctors, nurses and teachers in Amanzimtoti have been placed on antibiotics to prevent them from contracting a “very infectious” strain of meningitis following the death of a 7-year-old boy last week.
Paediatrician Thesiga Reddy, one of the doctors who treated the boy at Kingsway Hospital, said he was admitted with a “unique” case of meningococcal meningitis, which was known to progress rapidly. Although it was easy to treat in the early stages, “the child was unconscious by the time he got to the hospital”.
The boy was given the required antibiotics, but once that form of meningitis was at an advanced stage there was always “a poor outcome”.
Reddy said given that meningococcal meningitis was highly infectious the department of health had been informed of the boy’s case and was investigating. He said no other cases had been reported.

Durban hijackers flee with 4-year-old child

A case of carjacking has been opened after hijackers pointed a firearm at a 45-year-old man and fled with his 4-year-old child on Saturday morning.
The man, who was understood to be driving a Golf 7, was hijacked when he had stopped at a traffic light in New Germany, on the corner of Dinkelman and Shepstone Road. Four armed men pointed him with firearms, police said.
Police said they were unable to disclose the identity of the child or her father “at this stage”.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the incident happened at about 7.15am on Saturday.
“A 45-year-old male was with his four-year-old daughter in his VW Golf stationary at the traffic lights on the corner of Dinkelman and Shepstone Roads when a vehicle with four occupants stopped next him, pointed at him with firearms. They allegedly forced him out of his vehicle and sped off with his daughter inside,” said Mbele.
The police said no arrests had been made.

1. Infection
Nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea and fever are the most common symptoms of rotavirus. These symptoms usually start one to three days after exposure to the virus and last for an average of eight days.
‘If your family doctor or paediatrician suspects your child has rotavirus, the infection can be confirmed with a stool sample test,’ says Dr Heidi Ackermann, a paediatrician at Mediclinic George. Adults can also contract the virus, but the symptoms are usually much milder.
