The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has kicked off its provincial land summit to consolidate a position on how to go about expropriating privately owned land ahead of next week’s parliamentary hearings on land reform.
Provincial leaders have made it clear that the summit will deal with how to implement the governing party’s resolutions on expropriation of land without compensation and not with issues of land tenure and the future of land which falls under institutions like the Ingonyama Trust.

King Goodwill Zwelithini is getting more money. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu announced during his budget vote for the 2018/19 financial year in the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday that the Zulu monarch’s annual budget has been increased by R7-million‚ from R58.8-million last year to R65.8-million this year.

Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini’s gift of four cows to honour the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela did not sit well with some of his subjects.
Some, like Makhosi Ndokweni of Cumberwood in Durban, writing in Isolezwe, Independent Media’s Zulu newspaper called on the King to instead help uplift the poor people of KwaZulu-Natal and not just “prominent” people.

The ANC remains divided about its resolution to expropriate land without compensation, despite the historic vote in Parliament this week to start the process to amend the Constitution.
The motion was brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters and supported by the ANC, but it included a caveat that expropriation would only take place if food security and economic stability were guaranteed.
