Durban – Chaos has erupted in the northern KwaZulu-Natal town of Eshowe, after a 30-year-old man was shot dead while fishing at a farm in the area on Wednesday night. The man was reportedly shot dead by a security guard. After the shooting, a mob of angry residents barricaded the R66 with burning tyres and rubble.
The guard, 21, has since been charged with murder. Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, police spokesperson, said the guard is due to appear in court soon.

Cape Town – The search for a new service provider to assist the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) with cash payments of social grants will only be in place by July, MPs have heard.
Sassa admitted in court papers filed on Monday that there was no feasible solution to assist around 2.8 million beneficiaries – roughly 26% of the scheme, who receive their grants in cash – before the April 1 deadline

The South African Social Security Agency’s (Sassa) contingency plan to manage the cash component of the social grants system, were the Constitutional Court to deny an extension of the invalid CPS contract, was only work in progress, its acting CEO has said.
The Constitutional Court last week demanded that both Sassa and the South African Post Office (Sapo) clarify the contingency measures, put in place to deal with the payment of social grants.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), together with Transform RSA, have obtained an urgent court interdict at the North Gauteng High Court to prevent Eskom from concluding the outstanding renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) products, including the power purchase agreements.

A police officer who died almost eight years ago in a gruesome helicopter accident with seven colleagues has taught the police a lesson from his grave when his family won a battle for his promotion.
Tinus Gouws, who was a pilot in the air wing of the SA Police Service (SAPS), was promoted from warrant officer to captain and his family received back pay as part of a settlement with the police.
He was with his colleagues on their way to Emalahleni, formerly Witbank, responding to an armed robbery, at the time of the accident in 2010. The helicopter crashed in the veld and everybody on board was killed.

A police officer who survived this week’s attack on the Ngcobo Police Station in the Eastern Cape has described how he had to crawl on the ground to escape a volley of rifle fire that met him when he arrived to help his slain colleagues.
When the officer and a colleague, who were called as back-up from a nearby police station, arrived at 23:00 on Tuesday, the station was a “war zone” as between 15 and 20 armed attackers opened fire on them with automatic rifles.

Pretoria – Civil organisation Corruption Watch turned to the Gauteng High Court, in Pretoria, for an order setting aside the decision of the South African Social Services Agency (Sassa) to pay R317 million to Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) regarding the registration and payment of grant beneficiaries.
Corruption Watch want CPS to pay back the money, together with interest, to the public coffers, pending a recalculation of what the proven amount due to CPS is.
Sassa earlier withdrew its opposition to the review application, while CPS is defending the matter.
Advocate Steven Budlender, acting for Corruption Watch, on Thursday argued that the decision taken by Sassa to vary a services contract with CPS for the distribution of social grant payments to the poorest of society, is at the heart of this case.
Corruption Watch is of the opinion that the variation, which resulted in Sassa paying CPS R317 million, was unlawful.
Budlender said the money was paid in circumstances where the parties had not even agreed a cost for the varied services and where Sassa had failed to establish that this amount was even owed to CPS.
“This is irrational,” he said.
