Angry students disrupt lectures and blockaded the main entrance to the Westville campus by burning furniture and debris over registrations
The student representatives council (SCR) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is expected to meet the institution’s vice-chancellor on Friday.
This follows disruptions at the university’s Westville campus on Wednesday. Angry students disrupted lectures and blockaded the main entrance to the university by burning furniture and debris.
The executive director for corporate relations at UKZN, Ashton Bodrick, confirmed that the university remained open and that academic programmes would continue as scheduled, despite further protests by students on Thursday.
“Some students on the Westville campus continued with their protest action this morning. We have received reports that some lectures were disrupted. The executive management committee (EMC) has given due consideration to the matters raised by the students and is engaging the SRC leadership on a way forward.”

Pandemonium brakes loose at China Mall – Woman falls to her death in an attempt to escape violent protesters in Durban
Chaos erupted in the area on Sunday night, when a mob of 100 people burnt and looted local tuckshops.
A man was shot dead and two others wounded after shop owners allegedly opened fire on the mob.
Violent action continued into Monday morning, when roads were blocked off and tyres were set alight.
According to Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson, on 25 March 2019, a female, believed to be about 45 years old, fell to her death when she plunged through the roof of a building at China Mall in Inanda Road, Durban. Jamieson said the female was allegedly trying to runaway from incensed protesters when the tragedy occurred.
She fell approx 3m to her death. Paramedics arrived to find her in a state of cardiac arrest. The patient sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased on scene.
It has not yet been established whether the woman was a shop owner or an employee.

Four people aged between 32 and 64 were on Tuesday, 8 May 2018, arrested following acts of public violence at Seleteng Ga-Mphahlele next to Lebowakgomo.
