Chaos erupted in the area on Sunday night, when a mob of 100 people burnt and looted local tuckshops.
A man was shot dead and two others wounded after shop owners allegedly opened fire on the mob.
Violent action continued into Monday morning, when roads were blocked off and tyres were set alight.
According to Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson, on 25 March 2019, a female, believed to be about 45 years old, fell to her death when she plunged through the roof of a building at China Mall in Inanda Road, Durban. Jamieson said the female was allegedly trying to runaway from incensed protesters when the tragedy occurred.
She fell approx 3m to her death. Paramedics arrived to find her in a state of cardiac arrest. The patient sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased on scene.
It has not yet been established whether the woman was a shop owner or an employee.
Two men who were also trying to escape the mob on the roof also fell through and suffered serious injuries. He said the injured men were receiving medical treatment on the scene.
Inanda road has been blocked on both sides from NCP to China Mall. The people are striking and burning the roads. They have already attacked the BP Garage on 26 Palmfield Road.
Jamieson described the situation around the China Mall as “extremely hostile”. Police were trying to contain the situation. Members of the public are urged to keep away and avoid the area.
