Thousands of operations canceled in Gauteng hospitals due to defective infrastructure or lack of basic medical supplies

Gauteng Department of Health reported nearly 2,036 canceled operations in Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in 2018. A total of 1,979 surgeries were postponed at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital last year.

According to Gauteng Health MEC spokesperson Kwara Kekana, operations are canceled or delayed due to various reasons such as an overcrowded high-care unit, patient problems, inadequate infrastructure or a shortage of basic medical supplies. However, they now want to take strict measures to prevent the cancellation of non-emergency operations at the Charlotte Maxeke and Chris Hani Baragwanath hospitals in Johannesburg.

Two SA doctors are making revolutionary advances in malaria research

In the small village of Musina in the Far Northern Transvaal, a revolutionary piece of scientific progress has been made that can save millions of people’s lives.

This is especially true for young children who die in large numbers every year due to malaria that could not be determined in time.

According to the two doctors, they have developed a practical application to “divide” malaria which helps to reduce the spread of parasites and thereby reduce the transmission of mosquitoes.

A test is performed on the patient who indicates very soon whether malaria is present or not.

The system has also aroused the interest of world leaders in the field of malaria research, which has now made R22 million available

Malaria infects almost 250 million people annually, of which about 500,000 die from the infection each year.

The two doctors, Benji Pretorius and Richard Schmidt, apparently want to continue their work to combat the dreaded disease.

AfriForum het vandag in ’n brief aan president Cyril Ramaphosa, minister van finansies Tito Mboweni en minister van gesondheid Zweli Mkhize gestuur waarin die burgerregteorganisasie waarsku dat die inwerkingstelling van nasionale gesondheidsversekering (NGV) uiteindelik tot die afgradering van die land se kredietgradering tot rommelstatus kan lei.

Dít volg nadat die kredietgraderingsagentskap Moody’s Suid-Afrika se kredietgradering onlangs van ’n stabiele na ’n negatiewe vooruitsig afgegradeer het. Die rede vir dié afgradering is volgens Moody’s somber groeivooruitsigte en groeiende openbare skuld. In sy brief voer AfriForum aan dat onbekostigbare, ideologiese beleide soos die NGV daartoe gaan lei dat Suid-Afrika na rommelstatus afgegradeer sal word, aangesien die land dit eenvoudig nie kan befonds nie.

2,600 graduated young doctors not yet placed out for their one-year mandatory service

The ANC government is again, as it was last year, extremely negligent in dealing with graduated young doctors who have to be posted for their one year community service.

About 2,600 young doctors who have graduated within a month have not yet been notified where to go for their one-year mandatory service to the community.

Last year, the same neglect was experienced and students were plunged into total chaos as the Department of Health failed to notify the young doctors in a timely manner of their service.

Meanwhile, information has been received that the young doctors are concerned that the authorities are not ready to place them, and therefore have not taken the necessary information and measures to compensate them.

No more water at Gauteng state hospital – operations canceled and patients diverted

The Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston has had to cancel operations and divert patients because of a failure of water supply from the City of Ekurhuleni municipality, the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng said on Sunday.

“I visited the hospital last week on Friday after receiving reports that the hospital ran out of water the day before. It appears that the problem is due to a faulty water valve, and water tankers have been sent to fill the hospital’s reservoirs,” DA Gauteng MPL Jack Bloom said in a statement on Sunday.

The reservoirs could hold 140,000 litres of water, but the pumps could only work when it was half full and not enough water tankers were sent on Friday – each tanker held 18,000 litres.

“I am concerned by the slow response of the municipality which is putting great strain on the hospital as it tries to cope with a minimal amount of water,” he said.

South Africans are treated like animals at Tlhabane Community Health Center (CHC) in Rustenburg. This facility was officially opened by Health MEC, Dr. Magome Masike on in 2014, to address the main challenge of access to health care. 

The disgusting and dangerous conditions in state run hospitals show a wilful negligence by the Department of Health, managed by the ANC.

It is well known that the Department of Health has been mismanaging state hospitals – South Africans are regularly mis-diagnosed, ignored, left for days without treatment, and receive horrific care. The results sometimes are catastrophic.

The ANC’s neglect of our hospitals is tantamount to criminal behaviour – who would have expected our own black government to be the ‘reincarnation’ of the oppressive apartheid regime? Women who have been forced to go without their usual birth control shot are now facing the consequences of months-long shortages. For many women in Rustenburg’s Bojanala Platinum District, Kgaladi Mphahlele is the first person they see after an abortion.

And one of the things they speak about is how to avoid seeing each other again.

Mphahlele works for the international humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders’ (MSF) and manages their termination of pregnancy programme in North West. There, he counsels women who have had abortions about ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies in the future by using contraception.

But for most of last year, Mphahlele couldn’t give women much of anything to avoid falling pregnant again — there were no contraceptives in the five clinics he manages.

Dedicated cannabis expo at Sun Exhibits at GrandWest in Cape Town this April

The Cannabis Expo, a trade and consumer exhibition dedicated to the cannabis industry, is set be held at Sun Exhibits at GrandWest in Cape Town from 4 to 7 April.

Headlined by multinational healthcare group, Go Life International, the Cape Town event follows the official launch of The Cannabis Expo in Pretoria last year.

According to the organisers, this is the largest exhibition of its kind on the African continent, and due to a number of reasons – including SA’s liberal laws, geographic climate, population demographics, and the wide array of cultures – the country is “expected to become one of the largest cannabis industry marketplaces in the world”.

Billions are lost due to Doctors, hospitals and medical aid members collude to commit fraud

The Special Investigating Unit says it is actively targeting fraudsters in the private healthcare sector.

Fraud, waste and abuse is costing the private healthcare system more than R22-billion, and if you submit false claims, you could face more than just being terminated from your scheme, the Council for Medical Schemes warned at its summit on fraud this week.

The event comes after deputy president David Mabuza announced at the Presidential Health Summit that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) would be honing in on the healthcare sector.

“We want independent investigations that are turned around quickly and submit and identify findings appropriately,” Mabuza said at the October gathering.

The CMS estimates that fraud, abuse or waste accounts for about 15% of the R160-billion in claims that medical aids pay out annually.

Die Laerskool Vaalwater in Limpopo is tot verdere kennisgewing gesluit nadat skarlakenkoors by etlike leerlinge en onderwysers gediagnoseer is.

Ouers is Maandagoggend laat weet om hul kinders as voorkomingsmaatreël by die skool te gaan haal.

Skarlakenkoors is Vrydag by twee gr. R-leerlinge van die Laerskool Vaalwater deur dokters gediagnoseer. Daar word nog vasgestel hoeveel van die skool se 195 leerlinge die siekte onder lede het.

Bronne na aan die skool sê nóg leerlinge het Maandag siek by die skool opgedaag.

Minstens ses onderwysers is intussen ook met die hoogs aansteeklike bakteriese siekte besmet. Die skool het die onderwysdepartement in kennis gestel.

Directives recently issued by the national and Gauteng health departments requiring foreign nationals to pay in full for healthcare at public facilities weren’t only a threat to public health, they may have been downright illegal.

Walk into a public hospital, and you may be asked to fill out a form stating just how much you earn. That’s because many services in the public sector are billed for on a sliding scale based on a means test: You pay what you can for the treatment you need. At least in theory.

In mid-January, a national health department circular reportedly instructed clinics and hospitals to begin billing foreign nationals the full rate for public health services. Low-income refugees, the memo said, would be the sole exception and would be means tested, Business Day reported.
