Although the Chinese CoronaVac vaccine has not been fully approved or used in South Africa, SA is included with other third world countries in the Phase III trials of Sinovac’s coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine on children and adolescents. The launch of the South African leg was recently held in Pretoria, South Africa, where approximately 2,000 children and adolescents from six months to 17 years will be enrolled, to test the safety and efficacy of the CoronaVac vaccine, although results from trials so far only show 50% effectiveness. The trials will test 14,000 children worldwide in Chile, the Philippines, Malaysia, Kenya and South Africa.

New drug approved:- Cipla’s new triple-combination antiretroviral drug approved

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has approved Cipla’s latest first-line triple-combination antiretroviral (ARV) treatment for HIV.
The new combination medicine commonly referred to as TLD, is a combination of tenofovir (TDF), lamivudine (3TC) and dolutegravir (DTG).
In future, TLD will be manufactured at Cipla’s facilities in Durban and Uganda, reinforcing Cipla’s commitment to produce medicines in Africa for Africa and ensuring more affordable treatment for patients.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) says it has developed contingency plans to ensure that its essential services are not disrupted during the ongoing protest action by the employees of the Department of Health.
Sahpra, which was established in February 2018 to replace the Medicines Control Council (MCC) as South Africa’s regulatory authority, continues with its work to ensure that health products available to the public are safe, effective and of good quality.
As the authority transitions from the MCC to Sahpra, it continues to be housed with the department employees in the Civitas building in Pretoria.

Valsartan, cardiovascular medication recalled in SA

Certain medicines containing the active pharmaceutical ingredient, valsartan, have been recalled by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) due to an impurity that was found at one of the manufacturing facilities in China that produces the molecule.
The molecule was recalled across several international markets including the USA and Europe as many originator and generic suppliers source valsartan from the same manufacturer.
The presence of the impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), could be linked to changes in the way the active substance was manufactured, but a thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause. The NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (carcinogen is any substance that when exposed to living tissue may cause the production of causing cancer) based on the results from laboratory tests, Sahpra said.
