Patients’ anti-depressant, anti-anxiety drugs cut – but department denies shortage

State patients needing anti-anxiety drugs or anti-depressants are being turned away from Provincial Hospital’s outpatient clinic and told by the nurses to buy their own drugs or that they do not need pills to stop an anxiety attack.

“I have lost so much weight that I now fit in a size 30 dress,” Cilla Uys, 67, said.

She developed an anxiety disorder after her husband was murdered. “I need my pills.”

Petro Wessels said: “They told me to drink less coffee and exercise more.”

Shelly Strimling, 50, was given a prescription for her anti-depressants on Thursday and told to go and buy the pills herself at the pharmacy. They cost R485.

“There are many others like me,” she said. “I am collecting letters of complaint to take to the Department of Health.”

Strimling has been a state patient for eight months.

Desperately seeking: A viable healthcare payment system

South Africa’s private healthcare sector is under severe pressure, particularly with rampant inflation tracking at rates higher than CPI, creating a system that will eventually, in the not too distant future, become unsustainable.
In fact, at the end of last year, most of the country’s medical aids announced double-digit premium increases for 2017.

Medical aid members still have to dig deep in their pockets

Despite having medical aid, many members still have to fork out chunks of money out of their own pocket for healthcare products and services.

“In South Africa, healthcare services and products is provided by parallel running public and private healthcare systems. Even though private healthcare is only available to a very small section of the South African society (16,3%), it still accounts for a disproportionate 52% of the total expenditure on healthcare,” says Dr Jaco van Zyl, medical executive at Cipla SA.

In the private healthcare market the two main methods of financing is through medical schemes and direct out-of-pocket payments by the patients, paradoxically most of the latter are made by medical scheme members.

Dr Aaron Motsoaledi calls for the arrest of violent hospital protesters

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has condemned violence and disorder perpetrated by staff members at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg, protesting against the non-payment of performance bonuses, saying the attack on the sick and vulnerable is unacceptable, and called for the arrest of perpetrators.

“Every decent human being knows who comes to hospitals. These are sick, very sick, vulnerable members of society. They are not part of these labour issues,” Motsoaledi said.

Catastrophic antibiotic threat from food

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – The greatly excessive use of antibiotics in food production in recent decades has made many bacteria more resistant to antibiotics. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has estimated that antibiotic use in animal husbandry, poultry farming and aquaculture in the US is over four times USDA recommended levels. Meanwhile, the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has estimated that 80 percent of all antibiotics sold in the USA are used on animals.

TEMBISA HOSPITAL – WOMAN WITH BROKEN LEGS STILL NOT TREATED AFTER 3 WEEKS

The woman was involved in a car accident at the end of April and has been in leg casts at the hospital since.

Eyewitness News has learnt that a woman who was admitted to the Tembisa Tertiary Hospital with two broken legs about three weeks ago has still not been treated.

The facility says one of the two operating machines has been out of order and doctors are battling to clear the backlog.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Dr Lekopane Mogaladi said: “The numbers that are coming have actually increased. We are managing to see them. In terms of P1, we see them within five minutes. The ones who are taking too long might be the P2 and P3, [they are] people with a longer waiting period. But it’s still within the framework of the provincial benchmark.”

He says the hospital also has an issue with CT scanners.

New medicines law will change rules on medical devices.

When the amendments to the Medicines and Related Substances Act come into operation, it will result in significant changes to the regulatory regime currently in place.

According to guidelines issued by the department of health and Medicines Control Council (MCC), the new regulations will apply to the manufacturing, importing, exporting and distribution of medium- and high-risk medical devices.

Although proposed licensing requirements will apply to local companies, foreign manufacturers exporting to South Africa will also be affected. “As it stands, the MCC is only responsible for managing the introduction of medicines in all forms into the local supply chain,” says Graham Anderson, Profmed’s CEO and principal office.

Medical negligence can take place in so many ways, and as a result it sometimes appears impossible for the ordinary man on the street to know when and for what he may claim. In this article we highlight a few examples of possible negligence claims and the different forms of damages that can be claimed in each instance.

Mrs Y – an elderly woman admitted to hospital for the treatment of an airway infection, is recuperating after a theater procedure. A hospital staff member had phoned Mrs Y’s husband and requested that he give telephonic permission for his wife’s heart moisture to be removed. He did not doubt in the medical experts’ advice and gave his permission. The procedure was performed under anesthesia. Later that same afternoon Mrs Y’s family members were informed that a mistake was made. She should never have undergone the procedure as it was in fact intended for another patient.

Parliament – Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi on Thursday said his department would assist victims of listeriosis and their families with data to institute litigation against companies found to have sold food contaminated with a deadly listeriosis strain.

“Those members of community who want to litigate, we will give all the information, we will give them all the data, we will given them all the expertise to help them to litigate…,” Motsoaledi said in Parliament, responding to a highly charged debate on the outbreak, which has claimed more than 180 lives.
