No more water at Gauteng state hospital – operations canceled and patients diverted

The Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston has had to cancel operations and divert patients because of a failure of water supply from the City of Ekurhuleni municipality, the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng said on Sunday.

“I visited the hospital last week on Friday after receiving reports that the hospital ran out of water the day before. It appears that the problem is due to a faulty water valve, and water tankers have been sent to fill the hospital’s reservoirs,” DA Gauteng MPL Jack Bloom said in a statement on Sunday.

The reservoirs could hold 140,000 litres of water, but the pumps could only work when it was half full and not enough water tankers were sent on Friday – each tanker held 18,000 litres.

“I am concerned by the slow response of the municipality which is putting great strain on the hospital as it tries to cope with a minimal amount of water,” he said.

South Africans are treated like animals at Tlhabane Community Health Center (CHC) in Rustenburg. This facility was officially opened by Health MEC, Dr. Magome Masike on in 2014, to address the main challenge of access to health care. 

The disgusting and dangerous conditions in state run hospitals show a wilful negligence by the Department of Health, managed by the ANC.

It is well known that the Department of Health has been mismanaging state hospitals – South Africans are regularly mis-diagnosed, ignored, left for days without treatment, and receive horrific care. The results sometimes are catastrophic.

The ANC’s neglect of our hospitals is tantamount to criminal behaviour – who would have expected our own black government to be the ‘reincarnation’ of the oppressive apartheid regime? This is far worse however, since vulnerable South Africans are neglected at the moment when they are most helpless .

‘Terminally ill children left to die in pain in SA government hospitals’ – ANC-regime has not yet implemented its policy on palliative care, affecting paediatric patients with terminal illnesses.

This is the assertion of paediatrician Dr Michelle Meiring, who said while the policy had been approved, there has been no budget to implement it.

“These kids are suffering in pain today. We need to do something more urgently,” she said.

Meiring is a senior lecturer in palliative medicine at the University of Cape Town, the founding director of Paedspal and chairperson of Patch-SA, a national paediatric palliative network.

“There are only a few places in South Africa offering proper pain relief, despite the fact that at least a million children are dying from – or living with – incurable conditions,” Meiring said.

“There’s nothing worse than being the doctor at the bedside of a child whose pain you can’t control.”

Pain isn’t just a horrible experience – it can have very real consequences for the patient’s health.

“Studies have shown that if you don’t treat pain, you can die sooner,” Meiring said.

Ill baby denied healthcare at state hospitals, as a result of very arrogant medical employees the infant died – death could have been prevented if medical team chose to do their job properly

A Pietermaritzburg woman’s impassioned plea for nurses at two city hospitals to help her very ill infant fell on deaf ears and hours later the five-month-old baby died.

After his mother was turned away from two state hospitals — Grey’s and Northdale — baby Brody Lee Bezuidenhout could not hold on any longer and died.

The grieving family told The Witness on Monday that had he been attended to urgently they believe Brody Lee would still be alive today.

The five-month-old baby died at Edendale Hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning after his family were allegedly earlier turned away by nurses at Grey’s and Northdale Hospitals.

A series of tests later revealed that baby Brody Lee had contracted bacterial meningitis. His bereaved aunt, Janine Kemp, said the infant woke up crying on Saturday night. The mother noticed that the baby was running a very high fever and could not calm down.

Die Wêreld Gesondheid Organisasie (WGO) van die Verenigde Nasies het ’n allesomvattende wêreld plan opgestel om ’n volgende griep epidemie te voorkom.

Die plan word beskou as die mees omvattende aksie wat ten doel het om die wêreld voor te berei vir die volgende griep pandemie.

Volgens die WGO is dit nie ’n kwessie van of so ’n griep pandemie sal uitbreek nie, die vraag is net wanneer gaan die gebeur.

Dit is die waarskuwing wat die WGO se Direkteur-Generaal, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in ’n verklaring gesê het.

“Die wêreld moet gereed wees om so ’n krisis die hoof te bied” het hy gesê en bygevoeg dat die koste van so ’n pandemie veel groter is as die medikasie wat gebruik kan word om dit te verhoed.

Suid-Afrika se gesondheidsektor het tans ’n landswye tekort aan lewensnoodsaaklike entstof wat voorkomend is vir Witseerkeel asook ’n entstof ter voorkoming van klem in die kaak.

Die tekort het ouers nie net gefrustreerd gelaat nie, maar veroorsaak woede en angs omdat hul geliefdes se algehele toestand bedreig word.

Die tekort aan die entstof is ’n ernstige bedreiging vir kinders se gesondheidstoestand en kan lei tot sterftes wat voorkom kon word.

Die mense in afgeleë gebiede moet dikwels lang afstand te voet aflê na klinieke waar hulle die voorkomende entstof kry vir hulle kinders, en word nou woedend omdat hulle telkens aangesê word om maar weer later te kom.

Dit blyk egter dat die tekort nie by verskaffers is nie, maar by die owerhede wat nalatig is om betyds hulle voorraad aan te vul.

SA becoming a third world country, healthcare in shambles – Overcrowding in mortuaries becoming a national problem and health risk

Unfolding investigations have led to the exposure of a national problem of overcrowding in South African mortuaries.

This was the outcome after local business owners, situated near the Middelburg State Mortuary, lost business due to the oppressive smell of decomposition permeating from the morgue.

The bodies of 18 cable thieves who perished in an explosion at the Gloria Mine are now resting in the state mortuary at room temperature, as post mortem procedures continue.

The already decomposed bodies, are withheld from refrigeration as pathologists try to preserve evidence.

It was later discovered that the Middelburg State Mortuary was suffering from overcrowding due to the influx of bodies as well as restricting laws that have been passed on in the previous year.

Forensic teams are struggling to stay afloat after the new laws prevent them from doing more than four autopsies a day, two days a week.

No more funds to treat foreigners says Gauteng health MEC. The Gauteng health department has sent letters of demand to foreign embassies as it tries to recover monies from foreign nationals who failed to settle their bills.

The Gauteng department of health needs alternative funding to deal with high volumes of foreigners who are treated in the province’s hospitals, straining its already tight budget.

Tomorrow, finance MEC Barbara Creecy is expected to deliver her provincial budget after giving the health department the biggest slice of the cake for the first time last year.

The troubled department received R46.4bn, about 38% of the total budget for the 2018/2019 financial year.

The budget represented an increase of R4.4bn, followed by education at R3.4bn. It was the first time in Gauteng history that the biggest allocation did not go to education. The department also faces medical negligence litigation, which was about R20bn last year.

Verstopte dreine, lekkende dakke, stukkende lugversorging en te min matrasse – Dis maar van die uitdagings by die Bophelong psigiatriese hospitaal naby Mahikeng wat in 2016 oopgemaak het en waaraan sowat R450 miljoen reeds bestee is.

Dr. Job Mokgoro, Noordwes se premier, was ná ’n besoek verlede Woensdag aan die hospitaal “geskok” oor die omstandighede daar, het sy woordvoerder, Vuyisele Ngesi, gesê. Die premier is veral bekommerd dat die nie-nakoming van aanvaarbare standaarde en norme onvermydelik sal lei tot die uitbreek van siektes omdat infeksiebeheer nie behoorlik toegepas word nie.

“Personeel se moraal en pasiënte se regte word benadeel omdat die personeel op infrastruktuur-uitdagings fokus pleks van al hul aandag aan die pasiënte te gee,” sê Mokgoro.

ANC-government to open state-owned pharmaceutical company – the idea of this is terrifying since we are all aware of the lack of skill government officials has not to mention a treasury that is lacking funding – How on earth will this move be sustainable?

The South African government plans to establish a competitive state pharmaceutical company in a bid to ‘de-commodify essential medicine supply to meet patient and national fiscal imperatives’.

This was one of the findings in the Presidential Health Summit report which was released to the public last week.

The report mandates that this state-owned company should be ‘innovative, competitive and highly skilled’ – with India provided as a country with a similar company and systems.

Government also plans to support innovative private sector initiatives ‘rooted in social responsibility ethos’ the report states.

While the introduction of a competitive state pharmaceutical company is seen as a medium-term possibility, the idea of a state-owned pharmaceutical company was mooted as far back as 2007.

Motsoaledi: We can’t wait to improve healthcare before implementing NHI

Government does not believe it can wait until the healthcare system is improved before implementing national health insurance, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has said.

The minister was speaking at a briefing at Tuynhuys, Parliament, where the report of the outcomes of the presidential health summit, held late last year, was released.

During his address on Tuesday, Motsoaledi said government would be taking significant steps towards implementing universal healthcare.

Last week, president Cyril Ramaphosa said that the National Health Insurance Bill would be tabled before Parliament this year.

NHI will ensure that South Africans can receive free health services at the point of care at both public and private quality-accredited healthcare service providers, Motsoaledi said.

NHI is a proposed state-run health financing system that aims to pool funds to provide access to quality health services for all South Africans regardless of their economic status.

Motsoaledi het Dinsdag op ’n mediakonferensie waar ’n verslag oor die beraadslaging op ’n spitsberaad oor die krisis in die gesondheidsorgsektor uitgereik is, nie die vraag beantwoord oor of die kabinet die NGV-wetsontwerp al goedgekeur het nie.

Wag en wees geduldig, was dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, minister van gesondheid, se antwoord op ’n vraag oor hoe ver die wetsontwerp oor nasionale gesondheidsversekering (NGV) van klaar is voordat dit in die parlement ter tafel gelê word.

Hy het ook te kenne gegee die oponthoud met die markondersoek na die private gesondheidsbedryf hou tans die wysigingswetsontwerp oor die Wet op Mediese Fondse terug.

“Die benadering was nog altyd wanneer alles klaar is, gaan dit parlement toe en dan word ’n aankondiging gemaak. Dis hoe dit met alle wetsontwerpe is. Ek verstaan nie hoekom dit nou anders moet wees nie,” het Motsoaledi gesê.

Skokkende wanbestuur by die Tshilidzini-hospitaal in Limpopo het daartoe gelei dat dr. Phophi Ramathuba, LUR vir gesondheid in Limpopo, dié hospitaal se hele bestuurspan in die pad gesteek het.

Die hospitaal in die Vhembe-gebied bedien ’n groot gemeenskap.

Probleme by die hospitaal sluit in vervalle geboue, swak diens, lang toue mense wat ure lank wag net om huis toe gestuur te word sonder enige hulp. Dit word grootliks toegeskryf aan swak bestuur.

Verskeie pasiënte het by Ramathuba gekla toe sy onlangs die hospitaal besoek het. Van hulle het gesê dat hulle ure gewag het, maar niemand was bereid om te help nie.

Ramathuba sê sy is bekommerd oor die negatiewe verslae wat die hospitaal gekry het en ’n regrukstrategie moet bewerkstellig word om die vertroue van die publiek te herstel.
