Let’s have a look at why doctors and nurses are facing unemployment

It’s the age of austerity and it’s bad news for doctors, nurses and patients alike — unless the state can do more with less.

Almost 200 posts for doctors and specialists remain unfilled at Gauteng’s four academic hospitals — and many of these posts are likely to remain empty, the health department says.

Gauteng hospitals can only fill half of its critical medical staff vacancies — positions that normally go to doctors, specialists and nurses, Gauteng health department deputy director general for clinical services Richard Lebethe says.

Hospitals were first informed about this via an April circular sent to hospitals.

The head of psychiatry at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Wendy Friedlander, says medical officers are feeling the strain of almost 80 vacant posts.

Die Suid-Afrikaanse Mediese Vereniging (SAMA) het beswaar aangeteken teen die reuse verlies van opgeleide dokters wat nou na ander lande verhuis omdat die regering hulle nie vir hulle jaar praktiese werk kan betaal nie.

Die uittog van pas afgestudeerde dokters is toegeskryf aan die Departement van Gesondheid se onvermoë om die dokters te plaas waar hulle diens kan doen, en waarvoor hulle deur die regering betaal moet word.

’n Woordvoerder van Sama sê die ernstige tekort aan dokters word verder in die wiele gery deur die Departement van Gesondheid wat nie hulle verantwoordelikheid nakom nie.

Hy sê die ernstige toestand soos malaria, tuberkulose, Vigs, en ander siekte toestande kan slegs effektief behandel en bestry word deur genoeg dokters wat ook kosbare ondervinding opdoen in die siekte toestande.

Sowat 440 mediese personeel wat nie geplaas is nie, en waarvan 400 beurshouers is, het glo die land verlaat omdat hulle hul beroep wil beoefen.

Race row erupted in South Africa after recruitment drive for just black doctors – South African officials advertise 100 new doctors, but not for whites

A race row has broken out in South Africa after health officials advertised for 100 new doctors, but did not allow white medics to apply for specialist roles.

The health department in the KwaZulu-Natal province expanded its registrar programme for 2019 from 314 to 414, but aimed to fill the new posts with only black candidates.

Health bosses said the move was implemented to redress the country’s historical racial imbalance of Apartheid that saw most high-ranking positions filed by white doctors.

Campaigners and human rights activists have branded the recruitment policy ‘discriminatory, unconstitutional and racist’.

Leaked documents show the department wanted to train a total of 366 black doctors and had already recruited 32 Indian, 12 white and four mixed race registrars, but need a further 100 black medics to meet employment equity targets.

The registrar programme trains doctors to become specialists over a four-year period.

Is SA bankrupt or just corrupt? – The Department of Health budget does not allow hundreds of graduates to be placed for community service

It is unclear whether South Africa is bankrupt and whether the corruption is increasing so much that hundreds of graduates sit at home after the country’s Department of Health’s budget does not seem to cater for placement in public facilities.

Graduates are required to continue to work for a year “just to please the state” after graduating.

The community service, of which more than 1,400 are medical graduates, is paid by the state, but it appears that there is no budget or money available, and now they are at home waiting for answers.

Some of the medical staff are paid by the US Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Pepfar) and the rest by the ANC’s ineffective government.

The government’s mandatory community service for graduate medical students aims to help combat the huge HIV problem while the masses continue to promote Aids with immorality.

A cancer drug offers more affordable treatment for diabetic retinopathy

Treatment for diabetic retinopathy can be expensive, especially in low and middle-income countries such as South Africa, but a recent doctoral study at Stellenbosch University (SU) found that a relatively cheap drug called bevacizumab could be effective.

“We found that injecting bevacizumab into the eyes could help treat diabetic eye disease and prevent blindness in people living in low and middle-income countries,” says Dr Jose Fernando Arevalo, chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Bayview Medical Center in the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore in America.

Aevalo, who is also the president of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, obtained his doctorate in ophthalmology at the second ceremony of SU’s December graduation.

Government health care system a disgrace – Elderly man from Sasolburg fear for his life after told to only come back to Boitumelo Regional Hospital in 2020 for much needed surgery

A 61-year-old Sasolburg man has been left angered and fearing for his life after being told he has to wait until 2020 before he can have surgery at a hospital in Kroonstad to treat his debilitating condition.

Joseph Morake had already waited seven months for November 30, the initial date of surgery given to him in April this year at Boitumelo Regional Hospital to alleviate the severe swelling in his scrotum – a condition known as bilateral hydrocele.

“To my understanding, if left untreated, this swelling could lead to a hernia or even prostate cancer.

“I already had anxiety throughout the seven months waiting for the surgery meant for last month … At my age, it really isn’t easy. And the swelling was getting enormous, making it difficult for me to sit or even use the toilet,” Morake told City Press this week.

Pietermaritzburg mortuary mess:- workers return to work after arrests

The Fort Napier workers had been on a go-slow since November. They have been demanding a wage increase, back pay and better working conditions.

Seventeen employees of the Fort Napier Medico Legal Mortuary in Pietermaritzburg, who were arrested on Monday, were released with a warning on Tuesday. They were arrested after the Department of Health issued an ultimatum to workers to return to work or face arrest.

Department of Health spokesperson Ncumisa Mafunda said that on Tuesday, 16 forensic pathology staff members from Gale Street Medico Legal Mortuary in Durban had also been arrested. According to National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) provincial secretary Phakama Ndunakazi, they were released the same day.

In ‘n verslag van die SA Health Review blyk dit dat die tekort aan menslike hulpbronne die ANC se droom van universele gesondheid dekking kelder. Die verslag toon dat veral die landelike areas ernstige tekorte het aan mediese beamptes.

Syfers toon dat soveel as 106,000 poste reeds in 2010 vakant was vir 14 kliniese gesondheidsprofessies.

Waar en hoe die staat die poste gaan vul is ‘n raaisel en die vermoede bestaan dat gekwalifiseerdes vanuit die buiteland ingevoer sal word om te verseker dat die blankes van Suid-Afrika nie aangestel word nie.

Less than 2000 state ambulances nationally may be on the road

The national health department says it is against outsourcing emergency services. But with a grave shortage of ambulances, it may have no choice.
Just 1971 state ambulance vehicles are on the road nationally, a Bhekisisa survey reveals.

Health department guidelines say there should be at least 5 700 ambulances in operation — or one for every 10 000 people, according to standards quoted in the KwaZulu-Natal health department 2017 annual report. But with less than 2 000 actually functioning, there are only enough state emergency vehicles to cater for about a third of the population, data from provinces show.

A May audit of provincial health departments by the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) found shortages of ambulances and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel in several provinces.

’n Pretoriase vrou is in skok nadat haar “koorsblaar” in ’n lewensgevaarlike kanker ontaard het wat al groot dele van haar gesig geskend het.

Clara van Heerden (52), van Hermanstad in Pretoria-Wes, beskuldig die dokters van die Steve Biko- akademiese hospitaal dat hulle haar al sedert 2016 verkeerd gediagnoseer het.

Sy sê die dokters daar het aanhoudend gesê sy het ’n infeksie. Hulle het verskeie reekse antibiotika voorgeskryf, maar nooit ’n biopsie gedoen nie.

“Niks het gehelp nie,” sê sy. “Dit was die heeltyd net seer.”

En elke keer was die “koorsblaar” groter.

Sy sê sy is al sedert verlede jaar op ’n waglys om ’n biopsie te kry.

Sowat ’n maand gelede het sy dit met die finansiële hulp van ander in die private sektor laat doen.

Dr. Fritz Hoogendijk, ’n private kaak- en mondchirurg, het twee weke gelede vir haar die uitslag van die biopsie gegee: Sy het nog al die tyd kanker en nie ’n koorsblaar nie.

Buite die lykshuis drom desperate groepies familielede saam om te wag vir ’n geliefde se lyk. Sodra die wind draai, tref die stank jou.

’n Man, wat anoniem wil bly, vertel sy broer is Maandag doodgeskiet in Vosloorus en hy het gekom om hom te kom haal. “Ons hoor by die ander families hier daar is lyke wat al twee weke hier binne lê.

“Wat nou gebeur, is jy moet die werkers omkoop om seker te maak jóú geliefde se lyk is volgende . . .”

Twee verskillende begrafnisondernemers, wat om professionele redes en hul gereelde kontak met dié lykshuis ook nie geïdentifiseer wil word nie, vertel aan Rapport die fasiliteit is chaoties.

Een staan saam met ’n pa in rou wat sy dogter se lyk ná twee weke kom haal, en vertel hy wéét as hy nou ingaan, sal sy al “groen” wees.

’n Ander ondernemer sê die werkers “gee eenvoudig nie om nie’’.

NEWS ANALYSIS

The health system is in crisis, government officials admit. Now, they have just weeks to produce an initial plan on how to fix it ahead of introducing a National Health Insurance (NHI), Deputy President David Mabuza revealed this weekend.

With its namesake, President Cyril Ramaphosa was absent from the presidential health summit. The gathering drew more than 100 representatives from civil society, government, unions, academia and the private sector. Prior to the event, that was held in Boksburg, each delegate received a 21-page concept note outlining challenges within the health system — this included corruption and how the NHI will incorporate the private sector.

Solutions proposed during the meeting will now form the basis for wider consultation ahead of a public plan to turn the health system.
