Sardine fever hits the KZN South coast and it is just in time for holidaymakers to experience this phenomenon natural occurrence
Durban – Sardines have been spotted in Waterfall Bluff in Port St John’s south of KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline. Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO, Phelisa Mangcu, advises visitors to keep their eyes on the local press and follow the KZN Sharks Board, fishing experts such as GoFish, as well as the fishing charters whose business it is to know the waters and marine life of the KZN South Coast.
“Sardine activity has been spotted further south and even though the sardines take some time to move up the coast, experts are predicting great shoals moving past the KZN South Coast, which has always been best for viewing all the action as well as catching the silvery fish from the shores.”Mangcu said.

Durban beachfront still in disrepair ahead of holiday rush
With Durban preparing to receive millions of visitors over the festive season, many of its beachfront showers are not working.
Njabulo Zondi, who works along the promenade as a sand sculptor, said they had not been operational for a few months.
“It’s the festive now and these showers must be working,” he said.
Zondi said he went to the beach at least three times a week and used water from the showers for his sculptures and after taking a swim.
Pensioner Robert Sinner, who also frequents the beachfront, said of the two sets of showers at North Beach, only two showers from one set were working.
“Those showers haven’t been working for nine months, and three months ago they started leaking water. When I enquire, I am told the spares to fix them are imported from overseas,” Sinner said, adding that the beachfront was in a bad state.
“At least three times this year salt water made its way into the freshwater taps. Local clubs had to buy bottle

Durban beach-front degeneration exposé – “Guess Carte Blanche’s camera footage is blowing it out of proportion then” is the typical response from ANC Mayor’s office!
Durban – The city’s Golden Mile – stretching 6km along the beachfront from Blue Lagoon to uShaka – came under the spotlight this week in a Carte Blanche exposé showing how drug addicts and vagrants have hijacked some of the city’s most valuable sites.
With about 1million visitors expected to descend on the city this festive season, it is expecting to receive at least a R2.4billion cash injection over December and January.
However, the investigative journalism TV series reported that robberies, stabbings, drug dealings and pollution threaten to scare away visitors.
The programme’s recent feature showed how heroin needles and shards of broken glass from bottles smashed to make crack pipes can be found on the sandy shores, alleys between hotels and street corners meters away from the Golden Mile.
But the city says that it is making a concerted effort to ensure that beaches are properly maintained, and that it is speaking to NGOs about ways to deal with th
