The Democratic Alliance’s Athol Trollip has been ousted from his position as mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay. The putsch happened during a contentious council meeting where DA caucus members and the municipal manager walked out of the chambers after the removal of its speaker, Jonathan Lawack.

Athol Trollip is facing a motion of no-confidence intended to remove him as mayor. Trollip became Mayor in 2016 when the DA formed a coalition with the EFF to take Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Council away from the ANC.
The coalition fell apart in the meantime and the former coalition partner is now tabling the motion against Trollip. This means that Nelson Mandela Bay will probably be returned to the ANC.

EFF leader Julius Malema wants to remove Athol Trollip as the mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro on April 6 because he is white.
“Why not [Herman] Mashaba? Why not Solly [Msimanga] and all of that? Because the mayor of [the] DA in PE (Port Elizabeth) is a white man‚” Malema said.
