After recent murmurs of a planned SAPS strike, Police Minister Bheki Cele noted that he, alongside national commissioner general Khehla Sitole, would address the media on this issue on Thursday, 14 March, at the Gauteng SAPS Provincial headquarters, in Parktown.
Is the SAPS strike legitimate?
As reported by The Mercury, the rumours surfaced on social media after it’s alleged that a number of police officers were disgruntled by the promotions policy in the force.
“The reports are purporting that SAPS members are apparently unhappy about the recent promotions and regrading process that benefited a “certain” category of members within the service,” police spokesperson, Reneilwe Serero wrote in a statement.
Why are police officers threatening to protest?
Furthermore, it is alleged that this was fuelled by the nepotism that has grappled growth in specialised units such as the well-renowned Amabarethe.
Station officers are believed to be the ones who have been sending out these notes on social media.
“How shameful of the SAPS and its minister to promote such nonsense. Station members are paying with their lives on a daily basis. Station members are in the forefront of the battle and in the firing line.

“Where are these specialised units when station members are killed left, right and centre without any promotion?” one note read.
Are police officers allowed to protest?
The lines are blurred on whether it is illegal or not for police officers to protest in South Africa.
There hasn’t been a threat of this kind since 2007 when the Police and Prison Civil Rights Union (Popcru) threatened to go on strike.
Back then, the Johannesburg Labour Court had ruled that it was illegal for police officers, employed under the South African Police Act, to protest.
There are currently no provisions on the worst case scenario since there is no official body that polices the police.
More detailed information about the validity of these rumours will be made available once Cele has cleared the air on Thursday.
