Baba dood na swak diens in staatshospitaal – Nuwe ma ontneem van haar geluk

‘n Bronkhorstspruit ma, Priscilla Fuhri (39), is ontneem van haar geluk toe sy moes toekyk hoe haar pasgebore baba dogtertjie voor haar oë versmoor en tot sterwe kom as gevolg van nalatigheid by ’n mediese regerings instansie.

Priscilla het op Maandag, 11 September in kraam gegaan. Sy was teen die tyd net ses maande en ’n week swanger. Sy moes as gevolg van komlikasies, op vier en ’n half maande gaan vir steke in haar baarmoeder. Die rede hiervoor was dat haar baarmoeder te klein is en die steke verhoed dat die baarmoeder skeur wat ‘n vroeë kraam belemmer.

Om ongeveer 16h00 die Maandag het Priscilla abnormale voorgeboorte tekens gewys soos bloeding en vererge kraampyne. “Dit het groot kommer gewek” sê sy. Sy is deur ’n barmhartige Samaritaan na die Bronkhorstspruit Hospitaal geneem. Daar aangekom is sy op ‘n drup geplaas. Sy is toe per ambulans na ’n Staatshospitaal vervoer.

Security guards denied woman entry at Steve Biko Academic Hospital to see dying mom

Health authorities were on Tuesday scrambling for explanations on why security guards denied a woman entry to Steve Biko Academic Hospital to say goodbye to her dying mother.

All the provincial Department of Health could say was that it would try to ascertain the facts around the allegations made by Laetitia Musiker.

The woman wept uncontrollably as she spoke of her battle to gain access to the hospital, having earlier been phoned and asked to rush there as her mother was dying.

On arrival, Musiker alleged security guards insisted that she joined the queue of visitors. While she battled to convince the security personnel to allow her in, her 84-year-old mother, Joanna Fraetas, died.

“I had just wanted to thank her for everything and that I loved her because she deserved to hear that in her last moments, but I was denied that chance,” said a sobbing Musiker.

Fake doctor rapes teen mom at an Eastern Cape hospital just hours after giving birth

A 17-year-old girl was raped at an Eastern Cape hospital just hours after giving birth‚ provincial police said on Wednesday.

Captain Dineo Koena said the girl had given birth on Monday.

“On Tuesday‚ a man came posing as a doctor. He asked her how she was doing following the birthing experience. She complained of heavy bleeding and he said he would a check-up on her‚” said Koena.

“He then ordered her to undress and then he raped her‚” said Koena.

The rape occurred at around 9.30am at the hospital.

Three hours later‚ the suspected rapist was arrested at the same hospital.

Koena said the man was not employed by the hospital in any capacity.

He was expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape.

Final year medical student informed that SA’s Department of Health has no placement for her, this in a 3rd world country complaining of its lack of medical doctors

As a final year medical student who has completed her studies with an aggregate above 70%, ….. has just been informed that the Department of Health has no placement for me, and a multitude (almost 10% of all MBChB graduates of the class of 2017) to do my obligatory internship in 2018.  I am thus officially an unemployed medical doctor in a 3rd world country continuously complaining of its lack in medical doctors.

I am further one of the few applicants who initially ONLY applied for non-restricted / RURAL placement in response to the ministers comment in the previous year, that medical students refuse to work outside the larger metropolitan areas.

A Gauteng hospital to be rebuilt for R1.3 billion

Civil society organisations say that the cash-strapped province should rather save money and renovate the abandoned Kempton Park hospital.

Not only will the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development spend R127-milion to demolish the derelict Kempton Park Hospital, formerly known as Khayalami, they are planning to rebuild it for a whopping R1.3-billion.

This decision has been criticised by civil society organisations, who say the cash-strapped province should rather renovate the abandoned hospital and not waste money. The DA has promised to “closely monitor” the process.

Looking at some South Africa hospital horrors

South Africa´s recent spate of hospital horror stories and the sharp rise in cases of medical negligence are disturbing with medical negligence claims against provincial the country´s Health Departments increasing by around 25 per cent per year between 2011 and 2016.

This is according to Kirstie Haslam, partner at DSC Attorneys who says that the Gauteng Department of Health, (South Africa´s wealthiest province) receives a particularly staggering number of negligence claims each year. Since January 2015, it has been forced to pay out more than R1.017 billion ($US74 million) to settle 185 medical negligence claims.

“Deteriorating conditions in state hospitals, as well as incompetence and gross negligence on the part of staff members, are at the root of these claims – the vast majority of which were ruled in favour of the plaintiffs,” Haslam explains.

It’s now 90 years ago that Penicillin was discovered – and despite resistance, the future looks good for antibiotics

When the NHS turned 70 this year, I was reminded of another anniversary which has had an enormous impact on healthcare over many years. Penicillin is 90 this year.

Discovered in September 1928 by Alexander Fleming, it was first used as a cure when George Paine treated eye infections with it in 1930. A method for mass production was devised by Howard Florey and Ernst Chain in 1940, and it was first mass produced in 1942, with half of that total supply used for one patient being treated for streptococcal septicaemia.

In 1944, 2.3m doses were produced in time for the Normandy landings of World War II. And it was then that the miracle of penicillin became clear. Soldiers who had previously died from septicaemia were surviving.

Die nuwe en moderne hospitaal in De Aar is besig om in ’n wit olifant te ontaard, sê die DA, wat vandeesweek ’n oorsigbesoek daar gehad het.

Isak Fritz, DA-woordvoerder van gesondheid, sê dit is hoog tyd dat Fufe Makatong, LUR van gesondheid, die hospitaal besoek.

“Die hospitaal met sy moderne geriewe en tegnologie kan nie benut word nie weens ’n voortdurende tekort aan personeel en vaardighede.

“Daar is net vier dokters wat die hele hospitaal staande moet hou, terwyl daar nie naastenby genoeg verpleërs is nie.

“Boonop is daar ’n gebrek aan onderhoud wat die gesondheidsdienste benadeel. Die lugversorging funksioneer nie, wat nadelig vir pasiënte is.

Medical negligence claims in public health sector rise by 25%

The sorry state of the public health sector is reflected in the sharp rise in medical negligence claims against provincial health departments, increasing by around 25% per year between 2011 and 2016.

‘n Hospitaal word geassosieer met higiëne en orde- Dit, sê ’n ontstelde inwoner van Modimolle, is egter nie die geval by die F.H. Odendaal-hospitaal in Modimolle nie.

Foto’s van haar onlangse besoek aan die hospitaal wys ’n stukkende kraan wat met ’n vuil verband “reggemaak” is, stowwerige vensterbanke, toiletpapier wat in die bad lê, vuil toilette, gebreekte glasdeure en rommel wat besoekers vanaf die parkering na die hospitaal begelei.

“Ek sien op teen elke besoek aan die hospitaal. Die personeel is ongeskik en laat die mense ure lank onnodig wag. As ’n mens durf kla, raak hulle aggressief. Hulle is traag om pasiënte te help en staan eerder met mekaar en gesels. Dit is ’n skande dat ’n hospitaal waarvan so baie mense afhanklik is, in so ’n toestand is,” het sy gesê.

Mpumalanga woman claims nurses left her to deliver her own baby

The Mpumalanga department of health has dismissed allegations that a 31-year-old woman was left alone to deliver her own baby at a local hospital.

Ester Mnisi claims that nursing staff at Mapulaneng Hospital in Bushbuckridge ignored her pleas for help on Sunday, September 17, when she went into labour.

“It was on Sunday, around six in the morning, when I arrived at the hospital with my family as my water broke.

“We greeted the nurses, but they just kept quiet until we asked why. Their response was that they were tired and had been delivering too many babies on that day.

“They said they were about to wrap up for the seven o’clock shift and that we should wait our turn,” Mnisi said.

The Mpumalanga woman said she could feel the baby coming, but when she told the nurses this, they sent her off to a room.
