President Jacob Zuma has finally resigned, thereby avoiding a motion of no confidence in him which was planned for Parliament this afternoon.
He said during a live television address at the Union Buildings in Pretoria last night that although he steps aside, he doesn’t agree with the decision of the ANC which forced him to do so. Zuma says he doesn’t fear a no-confidence motion or impeachment since they are the lawful mechanisms for South Africans to remove their president. He added that he came to the decision to resign following his recall by the ANC’s National Executive Committee and speculation about his future as president.
