Fake doctor rapes teen mom at an Eastern Cape hospital just hours after giving birth

A 17-year-old girl was raped at an Eastern Cape hospital just hours after giving birth‚ provincial police said on Wednesday.

Captain Dineo Koena said the girl had given birth on Monday.

“On Tuesday‚ a man came posing as a doctor. He asked her how she was doing following the birthing experience. She complained of heavy bleeding and he said he would a check-up on her‚” said Koena.

“He then ordered her to undress and then he raped her‚” said Koena.

The rape occurred at around 9.30am at the hospital.

Three hours later‚ the suspected rapist was arrested at the same hospital.

Koena said the man was not employed by the hospital in any capacity.

He was expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape.

Mental health to be ‘outsourced’ in Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape department of health has published its R120-million tender to outsource chronic mental healthcare in the province – and has put emphasis on the reintegration of mental health patients in their communities.

Apart from chronic care‚ service providers have also been asked to tender for community-based initiatives to achieve this.

Seven-hundred adult and 180 paediatric mental health patients are now being cared for in Life Esidimeni centres in Kirkwood and Bethelsdorp.

The tender documents show that the department is also seeking to distribute beds for chronic mental health patients across the province if possible.

Long-term patients are currently housed at the 700-bed Life Esidimeni Kirkwood facility and the 180 children at Life Esidimeni’s Algoa Frail Care Centre in Bethelsdorp.

Twee pasgebore babas is dood ná ’n uitbreking van ’n weerstandige Klebsiella-bakterie in die Thelle Mogoerane-streekhospitaal in Vosloorus aan die Oos-Rand.

Klebsiella-longontsteking is in die hospitaal se neonatale-eenheid geïdentifiseer.

Lesemang Matuka, woordvoerder van die Gautengse departement van gesondheid, sê sewe gevalle van Klebsiella-longontsteking is in Julie geïdentifiseer “en het ongelukkig tot die sterfte van twee babas gelei”.

Monsters is geneem en is na die laboratorium gestuur om die bron van die siekte vas te stel.

Die hospitaal het sedertien maatreëls getref om infeksievoorkoming en -beheer te versterk en die eenheid noukeurig te monitor.

Die resultate van die nuutste peiling onder pasiënte wat Discovery Health uitgevoer het om die beste hospitale in die land aan te wys, toon sewe hospitale wat al vier jaar agtereenvolgens op die lysie is.

Lede van mediese skemas wat deur Discovery Health geadministreer word, het aan die peiling deelgeneem oor die hospitale waar hulle in 2017 opgeneem is. Die lys is uit 140 hospitale saamgestel.

Hellen Franz Hospital at Blouberg Municipality ka Limpopo must be placed under Administration,how can a Hospital operate without Lights,Toilet Papers,Panado, and Pain Killers..?

We can not allow ANC’s Phophi Ramathuba and her incompetent Managers to continue with killing of our people,this Hospital is now a Mortuary coz even if you go there with scratched finger,you won’t last for two days,you’ll die like a sick Mosquito,many people died here due to negligent of incompetent staff..!!

This ANC Government with it’s Phophi are taking our people for a ride,she must resign together with Onica Moloi on Friday, otherwise she has to be charged for #genocide ,how can a hospital operate with candles..,in this winter,how can you allow patients to bath with Cold Water..?

Doctor pleads for heaters for babies, gets departmental threats

A Limpopo hospital is in such a state of disrepair that a doctor has taken to begging for donations to improve conditions for patients.

This act of caring, however, has led to the department coming down on him with threats of disciplinary action.

Patients at the WF Knobel Hospital in Ga-Matlala outside Polokwane have to brave icy winter nights sleeping in wards with broken windows, leading doctor LE Rambuwane to write a letter urging people to help him raise R15 000 to buy and install 50 heaters in the paediatric wards.

“It is with great sadness and embarrassment having to write this letter to you,” his letter starts.

“I serve in a public hospital, which lacks many things, and with very little support from the powers that be…” it continues, before his plea for the public to donate.

When Bonokuhle Khali died in Nkonjeni District Hospital in Zululand, nurses left his body in a dimly lit corner in the male ward where rats spent hours eating the flesh on his face.

As his body lay just metres from sick patients in the ward, the rodents scurried under and over the sheet that covered it, chewing on his nose and lips.

Western Cape Health Department: Tygerberg Hospital must ‘be shut down and replaced’

The Western Cape’s biggest hospital is in such a dilapidated state that it will have to be shut down – and replaced.

This is what Parliament’s portfolio committee on health was told on Wednesday.

Head of the Western Cape Health Department, Beth Engelbrecht, told the committee the Hospital was in a dire state, its condition contributed to the billion-rand backlog in maintenance for provincial hospitals.

“Tygerberg Hospital is under severe pressure. The CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) assessed it and said the hospital must be replaced. We have spent R700 million just on maintenance in recent years and you walk through the hospital and you can’t see it – it is sewerage lines, gas lines and water lines,” she said.

Engelbrecht said it would cost an estimated R10 billion to replace the hospital. She said the department was canvassing National Treasury for funding.

Medical deans call on government to urgently address health crisis

The South African Committee of Medical Deans (SACoMD) has called on the government to take drastic steps to address the ongoing health crisis in the country.

In a statement‚ the committee said that despite multiple interventions on the part of the minister of health and the National Department of Health‚ it was of the view that the health system in South Africa remained in crisis.

“The Cabinet’s recent decision to place the North West Health Department under administration of the national government in the wake of the health worker protests and the appointment of the Intervention Task Team in the Gauteng Health Department to advise on a turn-around strategy are indicative of a limping and indeed failing health system‚” the committee said. “The Deans are calling on Government to take drastic steps to address the systemic failures in the provincial health departments as a matter of priority‚” it added.

R127-million allocated to demolish Kempton Park Hospital

The DA said it was shocked to learn that over R6-million has been spent on security at Kempton Park Hospital since its shut down in 1997.

This was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo, in a written reply to the DA’s Kempton Park constituency head, Refiloe Nt’sekhe.

“According to MEC Mamabolo, R6 932 541.35-m has been spent by the department on guarding this defunct hospital,” Nt’sekhe said on Monday.

In addition, the MEC confirmed that the hospital would be demolished and the process will begin in September at an estimated cost of R127-m.

This hospital should never have been shut down in the first place, Nt’sekhe added.

“By having kept this hospital open, there would not have been as much pressure on Tembisa Hospital, which is clearly not coping with the influx of patients. Residents in this area are forced to make use of only Tembisa Hospital.

Medical negligence can take place in so many ways, and as a result it sometimes appears impossible for the ordinary man on the street to know when and for what he may claim. In this article we highlight a few examples of possible negligence claims and the different forms of damages that can be claimed in each instance.

Mrs Y – an elderly woman admitted to hospital for the treatment of an airway infection, is recuperating after a theater procedure. A hospital staff member had phoned Mrs Y’s husband and requested that he give telephonic permission for his wife’s heart moisture to be removed. He did not doubt in the medical experts’ advice and gave his permission. The procedure was performed under anesthesia. Port Elizabeth’s Ernest Malgas drug rehabilitation centre for kids facing major problems

The Eastern Cape’s only state-owned drug rehabilitation centre for children – a R67-million facility opened with much fanfare in Port Elizabeth just two years ago – is falling into disrepair, with rehab services compromised.

The electric fence at the Ernest Malgas drug rehabilitation centre in Red Location is no longer working, resulting in some of the drug-addicted children escaping.

It has one working geyser and a non-functioning clinic.

Residents also drink openly close to the centre, according to sources.

The centre was opened in April 2016.

Several people involved with the centre, who did not want to be named, raised their concerns last week.

They included: The broken electric fence and children escaping over the walls;
The non-functioning clinic, which has led to the children asking staff members, other than nurses, for pain tablets;
A staff member who stayed away from work for a year;
