Durban drivers on the N2 were left stranded in a massive traffic backlog on Tuesday morning. Protesters blocked part of the busy highway with burning tyres just one day after rubbish was dumped in a similar area.
The N2 Durban bound was the area in question on Tuesday morning. A similar incident also took place in the uMbongintwini area.
“Police have an idea of who could have done this and arrests are expected to be made. Tyres were placed across all the lanes and then set alight. This has caused a severe traffic backlog. Vehicles had to be diverted from the N2 in Isipingo onto the M4,” Sewpersad said.
With a blockage of that scale, drivers had been attempting to utilise the emergency lanes to get past the tyres, an act police have urged motorists not to partake in.
When the fire department arrives on the scene, it has been unable to use the emergency lanes to put out the fire and remove the debris.
