A father lay helpless with bullet wounds as his 12-year-old daughter was shot dead in their family home in Bethelsdorp in Port Elizabeth last week.
Bethelsdorp police said an intruder forced his way into the home after the father refused him entry.
“The family was asleep when they heard loud knocking on their front door. The 43-year-old father refused to open the door and the suspects went around to the back of the house, kicked open the door and entered,” Colonel Priscilla Naidu said in a statement.
The father was shot three times and wounded, while his daughter was shot once and died, Naidu said.
The motive of the shooting was unknown and police were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
“Police condemn this attack and senseless killing of an innocent child in the strongest terms. All means possible will be used to thoroughly investigate this case and bring the culprits to book,” police said.
