Questions are raised after it became known that the Johannesburg City Council is considering a tender application worth R1.2 billion for its fleet of vehicles.
The current R1,4 billion tender with Avis over the past four years expires at the end of October and a new tender for just 30 months is on the table amounts to a whopping R1,2 billion at Afrirent.
Afrirent appears on the website as a company owned by 100% Black people.
About 2,732 vehicles will be rented to the city council over the period, which will be used by Metro Police, City Power and Johannesburg Water Board. Almost R700 million will be lost due to the fact that the contract is valid for 30 months only.
