Young white South Africans are suddenly good enough again to join the army after government has once again started a program to recruit white Afrikaners.
“Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has given a briefing to the defense force saying that the army must represent young men and women from the underrepresented communities and they should be serving in the army,” said Lieutenant Vusi Masondo, head of the army.
“The minister has made it clear that, in accordance with government’s policy of non-racialism, efforts should be made to ensure that we rectify the imbalances of our painful past. We must guard against an unwarranted situation where our army is out of proportion by a racial group. ”
The media was called on to help recruit young white South Africans. Mapisa-Nqakula made a confirmation last month by saying that few white people join the army.
Masondo made the following statement: “When I look at the entry level of the army, the younger people you see as you enter the hall … you can literally count how many white people join the army,” she said. “It’s worrying because we want to build an army that will still reflect the demographics of our society over five years.”
Meanwhile, Mapisa-Nqakula announced that the retirement age for military members will be increased from 60 years to 65 years.
