Could Jacob Zuma be jailed until he turns 90? A proposal made by the DA ahead of the 2019 Elections has revealed how long they believe JZ should spend behind bars.
Well, that’s one way to draw a line in the sand ahead of the 2019 Elections. DA Spokesperson Solly Malatsi has pulled no punches when it comes to outlining the party’s policies on corruption committed by high-profile figures like Jacob Zuma. In fact, he’s already shared a suggestion for how long JZ should face behind bars.
Malatsi was responding to the news that the ANC would help Zuma repay at least R16 million of public money used to fight Msholozi’s private court battles. The Pretoria High Court ruled he must “pay back the money” on Thursday, but the 76-year-old still has a major influence over his party.
Speaking to SABC on Friday, the ANC’s Acting Spokesperson Dakota Legote confirmed that the government take full responsibility for all of their former presidents, and said they would “accept accountability” for Zuma by raising the money to help him return taxpayer funds.
How long Jacob Zuma could face in jail
To Solly Malatsi, it’s just a terrible attempt at self-righteousness. He isn’t buying their line that they are helping out Zuma “so they can refund the taxpayer“, but instead believes they are currying favour with the former leader as a cynical election ploy. The DA representative also made it clear what they’d do with Zuma, should the party rise to power:
“The ANC, in whatever form and whoever leads it, will always protect the corrupt and justify the indefensible. That the party is prepared to pay for Jacob Zuma and his legal fees shows that he truly is still in charge.”
“They need him to campaign for the party ahead of the 2019 elections at all costs. The DA will continue fighting to ensure that those who are found guilty of corruption are held accountable, and our government would punish corruption through 15-year jail sentences.” Solly Malatsi
Zuma is a “2019 Elections tool”
On Friday evening, Jacob Zuma and his legal team filed for leave to appeal against a court-order that slapped him with the fees for challenging the State of Capture report. Yes, he’s still fighting against orders to return the public’s cash. It seems as if he’s learned nothing after Thursday, and he’s reverted back to the only tactic he knows: Delay, delay, delay.
