This decision will affect all Multichoice platforms and shows, in no uncertain terms, that the broadcasting giants are not planning to bow to pressure from members of the public threatening to boycott their service.
Multichoice took the decision a few weeks after they requested a Steve Hofmeyr video be removed from consideration at the Ghoema awards.
The music video was for Die Land and featured fellow Afrikaans music heavyweights Bok van Blerk, Jay, Ruhan Du Toit and Bobby van Jaarsveld.
Threats of boycott amount to nothing
MultiChoice felt that Steve Hofmeyr’s views were clearly at odds with their values. The company’s decision caused an outcry from a number of Afrikaans artists who felt that Hofmeyr’s removal amounted to censorship.
“We welcome a society where freedom of speech is celebrated, however, we take a stand against racism,” said Joe Heshu, Multichoice Group Executive Corporate Affairs.”
………But they are allowed to do so, this is just another way of ‘getting rid’ of Afrikaans and white people
This follows after MTN and Toyota cut all ties with Afrikaans is Groot due to Hofmeyr’s involvement in the show. The singer is known for his controversial statements about race and big brands refused to support a show with him in it.
Reaction from fans and critics
While social media users have taken the time to make videos of themselves removing their satellite dishes, support for Steve has seemed to decrease with each successive company that decides to distance themselves from his brand.
While Hofmeyr’s supporters were threatening to cancel their Multichoice subscriptions, other Netizens wanted to know where they’ll get their rugby fix, but on the other hand, there are so many Black Shows out there, but are we complaining, NO, we just change the channel, it seems like they feel threatened by Afrikaans.
