Ian Sinton of Standard Bank told the Zondo commission how the former minister of mineral affairs, Mosebenzi Zwane, requested the bank not to close the Gupta accounts, on which the minister pointed out that the bank would not violate the laws by doing so.
Zwane’s response was that he would change the law that would make it illegal for banks to just close accounts.
Zwane, in the presence of Mildred Oliphant, the minister of labor that time, went on to remind the bank that their license to operate a bank would be jeopardized if the bank was to refuse the government’s requests.
Jacob Zuma later asserted that the statements issued by Zwane, was “not coming from the Cabinet, the President or the Government”.
