Only a few incidents that received attention last month are a pupil who performed a lapdance at the Sikhululekile Secondary School in Pretoria, racist pupils of the Genl. Smuts High School in Vereeniging, who last Friday spoke against white teachers and refused to attend classes, pupils involved in gang fighting and a Eldorado Park Secondary School and student who pointed a firearm at a teacher.
Even in North West province, it’s not going much better, and a matter that has certainly attracted attention at government level was when a seventeen-year-old student at the Ramotshere High School in Dinokana attacked and killed a 24-year-old teacher.
The FF Plus believes that the misconduct of pupils at Gauteng schools is the result of Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education, attempts to remove codes of conduct at schools and its ongoing interference in the management of schools. The problems that broke out at schools last month are a symptom of the absence of discipline and disrespect for any form of authority, says Mr. Philip van Staden.
The FF Plus has already warned Lesufi in August 2016 not to get rid of codes of conduct in schools and that it would lead to total chaos and disorder in schools. The FF Plus warning is about to become true.
“Lesufi will have to start to realize that his stubborn action is completely transforming schools in Gauteng into lawless institutions that serve as training centers for criminals rather than educational institutions where learners need to learn order and discipline,” said Mr. Van Staden.
