During a media conference, AfriForum revealed that a total of 56 white schoolgirls have been left out of representative school-netball teams due to race, despite having qualified on merit. This is according to AfriForum, that have obtained the scores of selectors for Gauteng’s u.12 to u.18 school netball teams, which shows that 56 white girls were left out of the teams because of their skin colour.
In response, SA School Netball says it is a pity that children are now being used by adults to promote political agendas, Netball SA (NSA) believes it is cruel if players are left out on the basis of race alone.
Meanwhile, on behalf of the parents of the disadvantaged girls, AfriForum submitted an official complaint to SA School Netball, Gauteng School Netball and NSA. If the bodies do not respond, they will take the case to the International Netball Federation in an attempt to get rid of racial quotas. According to the rules of the International Netball Federation as well as that of the International Olympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation, any form of racial discrimination in sport is prohibited.
AfriForum hopes to obtain a strong court ruling to also fight racial quotas in other sports, as international sports organizations for other sports do not have a route in place that can be followed on race, but netball does.
