The Gauteng Department of Education will go through the process of placing more than 700 students.
The online application process for grades one and eight has been in place for the last three years but unfortunately technology can only do so much when dealing with overcrowding at schools.
While the online application system – which took place between 16 April and 28 May – has helped alleviate the physical lines when applying for a school for Gauteng’s students, a lack of places in high-demand schools means many parents are still waiting to find out if their children will have a seat in a classroom come January next year.
How many students secured a seat?
In total, 257 648 learners have already been placed in schools with 136 739 grade 1 learners and 120 909 grade 8 learners knowing where they’ll be educated next year.
Unfortunately, 748 pupils are as yet still unplaced with the department citing inadequate capacity, especially in the Johannesburg central, Johannesburg east, and Tshwane south districts.
The Gauteng Department of Education will go through the process of trying to place the 748 pupils at schools that are not yet at capacity. In some instances, the parents have appealed against the placement, because the schools are too far from home.

Education spokesperson Steve Mabona explained: “The only challenge with the 748 is we do have space, it’s an alternative space which some parents don’t want.” In light of that, Tisetso Bodiba said on Facebook:
“I just hope that by the 5th of November we will be relieved as parents. Please place the pupils in schools that are close to the address to avoid kids being late to schools. High schools need to have a higher intake as there are a lot of gr 1 applications.”
One parent said she was livid with the placement for her son: “I did not apply at the school he has been placed at. My son has never done any vernacular since he started school now u place him where he has to do isiZulu… I’m not impressed.”
In addition to the current backlog, the department will still need to deal with the annual influx of late applications from parents who missed the deadline.
