There are a considerable increase in farm attacks and murders since 2012, and especially after the recent elections, this is a major concern for TAU SA. According to Henry Geldenhuys, Deputy President of TAU SA, this state of affairs, especially considering the accompanying barbaric torture of victims, is frightening.
“The national murder rate of about 53 people a day is totally unacceptable to us and our members. In May alone, there were 46 attacks and 7 farm murders. June 2019 barely started and 5 attacks and 1 farm murder already took place; plots, cities and towns have already been excluded, ”SAID Geldenhuys.
The open question remains, when will concrete work be done at Government level, the SAPS and the NPA to curb the unexplained war on farmers? Political claims are made daily that farmers have stolen the land on which all residents of South Africa are being fed on. At this stage, the President as well as the entire cabinet, and especially the SAPS minister, are not saying anything about these attacks and murders that continue unabated. The question that arises is whether their silence can be seen as condoning this unacceptable situation.
“It certainly cannot continue like this! TAU SA challenges Government, SAPS and NPA to implement an effective and workable solution within the next month. The foundation of this must be that the law is applied purposefully and urgently. It is the duty of the SAPS to enforce laws such as property protection, combating terrorism, arson, treason, murder, rape, incitement to violence. The total decay of obedience in our country can no longer be seen with folded hands. There simply has to be acted upon. ”
He strongly advised farmers, black and white, to sharpen their safety and strategically include their farm workers. “Be armed, know how it works, and use it where necessary within the law to protect yourself and your family’s lives. If you are not yet part of a security structure, we strongly recommend getting involved. ”
TAU SA invites all agricultural organizations, input suppliers, security companies and everyone involved in rural security to work together urgently to exert pressure on government and their structures.
Geldenhuys asked that agricultural input suppliers also contribute financially to TAU SA’s security campaigns. “Without farmers there is no food on our tables, you will no longer be able to exist as an input supplier and will lose much of the countryside completely. That’s how serious the situation is, given the enormous growth in attacks and murders currently. This while large parts of the country’s farmers are suffering from a devastating drought and are faced with ongoing theft of agricultural products and livestock. The pressure on our finances to provide assistance in many areas is huge. ”
