She was a surprise choice, but Pemmy Majodina will get a fair crack of the ANC whip. Here’s what you need to know about the ‘flamboyant’ politician.
We’re getting down to the serious business of Parliamentary politics again this week. Well, at least that’s what someone should have told the ANC. Their ambitious pick for a new chief whip has turned heads across South Africa, as Pemmy Majodina comes in for Jackson Mthembu.
Who is Pemmy Majodina?
Majodina has a long political history. She has served as a MEC for sports in the Eastern Cape and had previously worked with Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Her new job means that the ANC will be lead by women in Parliament for the first time. She’s showed enough loyalty to the party to be considered for such a crucial role.
However, her time in office hasn’t been as spectacular as her dress sense.
Back in 2015, she was embroiled in an expenses scandal as details of her previous trip to the US emerged. The politician claimed back more than R18 000 for a few lunches in the States, which was over four times the budget she was allowed for food. Needless to say, her behavior enraged political rivals, including Cope:
“Cope considers it scandalous that Majodina should have requested R15 000 for five lunches at R3 000 per lunch during her 2012 trip to New York. Where does the ANC find such predators parading as MECs?” Cope statement
In the news for the wrong reasons
At the time, ex-Public Protector Thuli Madonsela recommended that the Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle took disciplinary action against Pemmy Majodina. Regardless of the scandal, she held on to her job.
She made headlines again just a few years later – at the funeral of one of her icons. The memorial service for Mama Winnie in Mbizana last April featured Majodina as one of the hosts. Her facial expressions stole the show.
Looking forward, not backward
Pemmy must be assessed on what she does next. Despite her previous indiscretion, this is a chance for everyone to make a fresh start. It’s a new Parliament, and it would be unfair for us to retrospectively judge her without having known much about the new chief whip.
Cyril Ramaphosa is looking to clean up his government and make the ruling party a much more presentable outfit. Keeping a low profile may be the best option for the new girl. Or, maybe not…
Pemmy Majodina’s most outrageous outfits
Speaking of show-stealing, look no further than her wardrobe. The ANC’s new chief whip doesn’t believe in anything low-key, and her flamboyant dress sense has made Majodina something of a cult hero in the Eastern Cape.
