It’s been a little while, hasn’t it? John Steenhuisen has laughed off suggestions the ANC have changed their ways, in a fiery speech delivered on Tuesday.
During a campaign speech in Kimberley, DA Chief Whip John Steenhuisen returned to his favourite past-time: Addressing the Provincial Legislature, he laid into the ruling party for their “blatant acts of corruption” and threatened to unseat them in the Northern Cape.
The DA have identified NC as a key battleground for the 2019 Elections, and Steenhuisen has been taking the opposition’s “One South Africa For All” campaign across the province.
John Steenhuisen talks ANC corruption
The whip has built a reputation for having the most compelling, acid-tongued takes on the government and Tuesday proved to be no exception. He lamented the billions of rand that had been lost to state-sponsored “looting”, and berated the ANC for claiming that they’ve turned over a new leaf:
“Corruption’s victims are mothers who can’t feed their children. Corruption’s victims are the elderly who have been on the housing waiting list since 1994. Indeed, corruption’s victims are young people who cannot find work.”
“There are too many people within the failing ANC and the administration of the ANC government, that have gotten their hands dirty. Just like the red sand of the Northern Cape, this dirt leaves a stain that will not come clean, no matter how much Ramaphoria you pour on it.” John Steenhuisen
Kimberley becomes 2019 battleground
Kimberley is also a location of vital significance for the party, too. Former ANC Provincial Chairperson and convicted criminal, John Block, committed many of fraudulent activities from his office in the town and he was sentenced to 15 years behind bars last year.
Boitumelo Babuseng is an MPL for the DA in Kimberley. According to Steenhuisen, he was recently assaulted by the ANC-linked Benton Sithebe, who has previously admitted to appropriating funds in order to boost his party’s share of the votes in the upcoming election.
This has created a very fractious atmosphere, and it is one John Steenhuisen is looking to harness as the major political parties prepare for the ballot in May. He finished his speech with a flourish, making sure that his anti-corruption message would stay ringing in a few ears:
“The failing ANC is no more intent on fighting corruption now, than it was pre-Ramaphosa. There is too much at stake for the ANC. Staying in power is everything to them. Tackling corruption, that implicates countless ANC elites, will do little to unify the ANC at this vote-tipping point in time.”
“And so it is that the ANC will not and cannot tackle corruption. The ANC therefore can’t take this country anywhere but down. Under their leadership, more and more funds will be wasted on corruption and less and less money will be available for critical services and grants.” John Steenhuisen
