A 73-year-old man died and his wife was extremely traumatised after the couple was attacked on their farm in Charl Cilliers in Mpumalanga on Friday night.
Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident.
He identified the couple as Johannes Cornelius (73) and Ilse Jakoba Meyer (69).
According to Hlathi the incident took place at approximately 22:30. He said the couple was apparently watching television in their living room when three armed thugs attacked them.
“The men apparently penetrated the house and insisted on the keys of the safe,” he said.
According to him, the thugs then forced Johannes into the bedroom and took the safe keys from him. After that, the group of thugs shot and killed him.
“The thugs allegedly stole a revolver and two hunting rifles during the incident. They also stole jewelry, an undisclosed amount of money, a television and a Ford Ranger bakkie,” he said.
Hlathi said the thugs fled shortly thereafter, but before they did. also shot the couple’s two dogs.
According to him, Ilse was viciously attacked but is in a stable condition.
No one has thus far been arrested in connection with the incident.
The registration number of the Ford Ranger bakkie is JKP 436 MP. The Police called on anyone with more information about the incident to contact Constable Phakisa Motau, the Investigation Officer, at 082 053 0306.
