Unconfirmed reports are currently rising over the possibility that Ramaphosa could dismiss the ministers who previously supported Jacob Zuma.
The ANC president earlier indicated that he would set up a much smaller cabinet in order to trim the expenses, and that he plans to reshuffle the cabinet.
This may indicate that the “Zuma Ministers” are going to bite the dust, say opinion polls and political analysts.
Fikile Mbalula, who is regarded as senior ANC leader, apparently said the cabinet would definitely be made smaller, and might be preparing for a cabinet post.
Mbeki had 50 cabinet members, and Zuma, with a heavy gesture, increased his cabinet to 73 ministers and deputy ministers.
The suspicion is that Ramaphosa will appoint as few as 30 cabinet members to comply with his earlier election promise.
This will mean that many ministers will not get a deputy, thereby improving their popularity among voters.
