After more than two years of silence about the possibility of hydraulic fracturing, where high-pressure drilling techniques are used to release natural gas trapped in shale rock in the Karoo, the possibility of the unacceptable practice has risen again.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the ANC still has its sights set on the practice of robbing the Karoo of its underground water sources with the extraction of shale gas.
The ANC’s Mantashe also said shale gas would soon be mined in the Karoo.
Strong action by experts has led the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal during July this year to cut off any possibility of hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo.
The ANC, which is constantly on the lookout for where they can still get money, has apparently made the claim that new methods have been developed to do the exploitation, but scientists say it is to put the same horse on a different saddle – nothing and the new methods must first prove globally that it has no effect on the destruction of underground water resources.
