Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City top the list of South Africa’s most dangerous cities

In terms of murder rates, Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City top the list of South Africa’s most dangerous cities.

A report due to be released on Wednesday reveals that Cape Town is the murder capital of South Africa.

The 2017 State of Urban Safety Report examines the state of crime and violence in the nation’s urban centres.

In terms of murder rates, Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City top the list of South Africa’s most dangerous cities.

Unsurprisingly, people living in these cities also report the highest levels of fear.

Cape Town also tops the list for the highest incidence of robbery and property related crimes.

The report underlines the fact that the Mother City’s population is growing at a slower rate than Johannesburg and Tshwane and also has the lowest level of poverty, as measured by the Human Development Index.

Those factors would generally be thought to reduce crime rates, but researchers say that alcohol abuse, easy access to drugs and firearms could be driving crime in Cape Town.
